The greatest depth here on a level was about 7 inches, though there must have been as much as 12 inches fell, but the ground not being frozen. Anson Allsorts A German by the name of Buettner was tried and convicted here to day for lunacy. The melted snow has muddied the roads so that the Abilene Mail Hack has not arrived to date. Messrs. Penick and Halsell of Stamford have a fine lot of mules on sale. Mr. Herndon, a drummer from Stamford, is doing our Grocery men to day, accompanied by Mr. Liggins of Kentucky. Miss Lena Fletcher, teacher of the CottonWood School is indisposed this week and is at home on a week’s vacation, during the bad weather. Marriage license issued since last report are as follows: Pierre P. Berthelot and Mrs. Louella Berry; J.D. Kincannon and Miss F.G. Shell; F.H. Petty and Miss Hattie Spoon. Local and Personal Married - Last Friday evening at 4 o’clock, Mr. P.P. Berthelot and Mrs. Lou Berry at the Stamford Inn. Rev. J.A. Biggs officiating. Mr. Berthelot is the Stamford Townsite company’s manager and has been very actively engaged from the time the town began its developing and promoting its material interests. The bride is well known in Stamford. Mrs. Berthelot, Mr. Berthelot’s mother was seriously ill and at her request the ceremony was performed in her room. Married - Mr. J.D. Kincannon and Miss Grear Shell at the home of the bride’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. Shell, Stamford. Rev. J.A. Biggs officiating. Mr. Kincannon is the son of B.R. Kincannon and is a young man of promising business future. Miss Grear was one of Stamford’s brightest and most attractive young ladies. this is to notify the public that the stock of furniture owned by B.M. Durrett & Co., has been sold to E.J. Harris and they solicit a patronage for him. A petition has been circulated this week to the City Council to pass an ordinance enforcing property owners to gravel their sidewalks. Rhineland Bettner, a young man living with his parents on the old Boland place south of town, went crazy the first of the week and threatened the life of his parents and became very violent. Constable Day went down but was unable to take him in custody. He was brought by Stamford to await the sheriff to take him to Anson to be tried for insanity. Marriage - At the City Hotel, at 8 o’clock p.m., February 23rd, Mr. F.H. Petty and Miss Hattie Spoon were married, Rev. J.A. Biggs officiating. At the hour appointed the hotel parlor was filled with invited guests. Mr. Douglas Short and Miss Bessie Cushenberry entered the parlor by one door. Mr. Sam Chatman and Miss Nova Cargill by the other. Miss Foy presided at the piano. A Mr. Walker near Haskell gave his wife carbolic acid through mistake last Sunday. Well I thought likely the News would like to have a brief description of our trip to Tennaha. We left Stamford January 26th and arrived here January 28th at 6 a.m. We found father very low. He died Feb. 2nd at 9:20 a.m. in the ripe age of 78 years, 1 month, 17 days. He had been a member of the Baptist church about 45 years. There have been several deaths here since we arrived and there is still a great deal of lagrippe and some pneumonia. -- Z.A. McMillan
