There have been 100 conversions and 75 accessions to the Methodist church. Members will be baptized Sunday morning at the close of the 11 o’clock service. Baptism will be performed at the tank near town Sunday afternoon. --J.A. Biggs, Pastor J.O. Kelley sold his farm this week, through G.W. McElveen, to Dr. J.J. Harlan of Hackneyville, Alabama for $21,919.00. Mr. Kelley get this present crop. There are 953 acres in the tract. U.C.V. Meeting Meeting of the 2nd Reg., 5th Brigade, Texas Division, was held in Sledge Hall, Stamford, May 6, 1905. Col. J.B. Carnohan, commanding, Aaron Wood, adjt. Comrade J.L. Fisher moved that the reunion this year be held at Camp Rike. Committee appointed to confer with A.H. Buie for campment. Comrade Farmer moved that reunions be within a reasonable distance. L.M. Buie, S.J. Wilson, Miss Jennie Buie and Miss Janie Whitfield left on the train Tuesday morning for Fresno, California to attend the General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. School Board elected Judge G.W. Dakan, Chas. Brewington, D.H. Johnston, J.E. Moody. Mr. G.M. Hill is in the field selling subscriptions to the News. Mr. G.W. Barr returned from Stonewall county last Saturday and reported that Mr. D.S. Cullum and his ranchman had found a human skeleton in a canyon five miles east of Aspermont on Mr. Cullum’s ranch. The skeleton showed it had been there many years. Bass Bros. Drug Co., of Abilene went into bankruptcy last week. This is one of the oldest business houses in Abilene. Larche From Sunnyside A petition to extend the road from Thomas Zimmerman’s to the Aspermont road, a distance of 2 miles. Miss Alice Keeling will close her school here May 19 with a concert which promises to be very interesting. this is Miss Keeling’s third year at Sunny Side which speaks of her popularity, and ability as a teacher. This school has an average attendance of 50 pupils. J. Phleps has the finest field of corn. Miss Inez Keeling of Stamford spent last week here with her sister, Miss Alice Keeling. Elder Lamb accompanied Elder Mangham to Sunny Side last Sunday. Bro. Mangham will preach for us every first Sunday. Rev. J.A. Biggs has an appointment every first and third Sundays. George Hill, traveling agent of the Stamford News was in our community last Tuesday. Avoca Items Rev. Scott delivered an excellent sermon Sunday. Mrs. L. Culwell and Miss Ruby Bragg were shopping in Stamford. George Anderson and wife are visiting relatives. Miss Willie Manning is the guest of Lucile Williams this week. Miss Georgia Bragg is on the sick list. From McCaulley W.L. Glasscock has returned from Denver, Colo., and was accompanied by his son and family. The concert at Whitley Chapel was well attended. S.J. Wilson goes to Stamford today. Bee Hammitt sold his place last week on Cleak Fork to a Mr. Hamilton at $15 per acre. The Burning Bush people held services at the School house several times the past week. Rev. Siler, the book man was in our midst last week. Anson Allsorts Following marriage licenses were issued: A.L. Currd and Miss Esther Elder; Gus Trammill and Miss Myrtle Cardwell; G.W. Magill and Miss Louise Fallis; J.P. Watson and Miss Virgie Wright; W.F. Herrington and Miss Lizzie Scott; G.W. Elders and Miss Pattie Shannon; C.L. Thompson and Miss Effie Hines; Stockton Henry and Miss Mable Nichols. Local and Personal S.W. Thomas, editor of the Aspermont Star passed Stamford Tuesday for Brownwood to attend the Texas Press Association. Major Taylor McRae of Fort Worth spoke to the U.C.V. in the City Hall Saturday night. Mr. E.P. Swenson came last Sunday evening for his semi-annual visit. Our old friend, R.W. Rhea called at the News office Monday and renewed. Mr. Rhea had just returned from a visit to his son at Graham. Graham, he says, is moving along nicely. Mr. R.S. Caperton called and renewed and placed his daughter, Miss Ama’s name. C.H. Holmburg’s horse hitched to a mesquite tree in front of the News. Earl Morris, a young man, the son of C.P. Morris broke his arm. Dr. J.R. Sledge and W.W. Fuqua representing the Stamford Fire Department and Miss Mamie Sledge, sponsor, and Miss Mary Border, maid of honor, left Tuesday to attend the State Fireman’s Association, Austin, Texas. L.E. Larche has moved into one of the new stores west of the postoffice. Lightning struck the barn of Mr. J.D. Miller, who lives at the old Siler place, last Sunday evening, cutting a strip through the roof and side setting the barn on fire. I have sold my interest in the Larche & Ham grocery business in Stamford. .. H.M. Ham We hear that the commissioners have ordered the opening of the Fisher county road and also the Morrell road, this is east of Stamford.
