Pennington died at his home in the Neinda neighborhood on Thursday. The corpse was brought to Stamford and put on the train Saturday morning and shipped to Royce City for interment. Capt. J.H. Millsay, Mrs. W.R. West, Mrs. Chapman and Miss McCrary with members of the family went on the mournful journey. Baseball Game The Avoca boys played the Stamford team last Saturday evening. The score stood 12 to 13 in favor of Avoca. The following is the list of the players engaged in the game: From Avoca, Jim Swan, Frank Sitton, Frank Hammer, G. Gaddy, P. Sandlin, L. Sitton, G. Hall, H. Sandlin and Owen Crosthwait. From Stamford, C. Mangham, Luke Ashburn, B. Hill, Burnard Bryant, Jess Penn, Will Stinnett, G. Bennett, E. Kerbow, and F. Kerbow. W.E. LaFon, umpire. Tuesday evening we have just had the heaviest rain since the Galveston Flood five years ago. Rains and Storms Last Saturday night there was a heavy dark cloud came up from the west, the lighting was nearly incessant, one bolt struck the telephone wire near the Steam Laundry, wrecked the phone and tore some planks from the house. The current ran down the flue of Mr. L.C. Smith’s house across the street. Elder J.P. Siler, the Baptist colporter had his wagon wrecked, but he was not hurt. We learned that there were some 14 houses blown away or badly wrecked. The Cyclone Tuesday evening, we met Bro. Siler coming in from the Marcy country. There were several preachers at Mr. Hutton’s the home at which he took dinner Sunday. The dwelling houses of the following gentlemen were entirely destroyed in the immediate neighborhood: J.D. Keeves, Jr., Wm. Henry, Mr. Parish, and Rev. Redwine, besides the house of Will Pounds who lost his wife and two children. Mr. Henry had a nice residence but was blown to pieces. Flat Top Items Mr. E.D. Ashburn returned from Kansas City for Southern Baptist convention. Mrs. B.F. Dixon was on the sick list. The year old babe of J.D. Stovall died this morning and was buried at Fairview cemetery this evening. [Marie Stovall, 14 May 1904 – 20 May 1905] Rev. B.F. Dixon and John McClaran returned yesterday from a ten days visit to Cosby and Lubbock counties. Mrs. Lillie Anderson is on the sick list. Points from Plainview Rev. Philley of Avoca passed through her Saturday enroute to Marcy, where he preaches Sunday. Mr. J.H. Suggs and lady of Spring Creek were visiting her mother her, Mrs. C.H. Miller. Mr. John Clark and family spent Sunday with Walter Smith and family on Double Mountain River. Mr. Dolph Cornelius has painted his residence. Mr. Flowers of Stonewall Co., was at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frizell Saturday night. Mr. Bird of Stamford was on his farm near Plainview. Mr. Collier and wife were visiting relatives near Abbie. Mr. C.H. Miller and daughters Miss Pearl and Lyna came in Sunday from Cottle county. Mrs. Tom Coleman was shopping in Stamford. Mr. C.H. Donahoo has had his residence and barn painted this week. Mrs. Gardner is on the sick list. Mr. Will Coleman brought home a new buggy last week. Paint Creek and Willow Paint are up since the big rain Sunday. Notice We have purchased the new Barber shop, 1st door west of postoffice. Galveston, Texas From Sunny Side Mr. Crawford of Stamford has been working for several days on a well on Mr. Wilkinson’s place east of the school house. The two German families on Mr. Wilkinson’s place have had a 20 acre field of milo maize destroyed by prairie dogs for the second time. Miss Cora Link was in Stamford. Mr. Thomas Link has been attending school at Weatherford and is at home. The mother of Mr. T.E. Harwell is very sick. Local and Personal Mr. T.B. Phelps has been on the sick list. Mr. George W. Whitworth of Jeanerett, La., is visiting his daughter, Mrs. C.E. Binning and family. R.E. Hinds, W.L. Power, Frank McCullough and Mr. Walker of Carney were in town this week. Mrs. Mary Mahone will be looking for a location to build a new house. R.M. Dickenson had a well drilled 140 feet, last week. He found water at about 100 feet, but the supply is not sufficient. The water seems to contain some kind of mineral. Misses Florence and Jodie T.McGee of Anson, in company with Miss Lilas Penick called at the News on Saturday. A phone message from Marcy Wednesday afternoon says that Mrs. Pounds was then still alive but no hopes of recovery. Mr. B.P. Bower was in town with his small child in a buggy, Wednesday, when two boys in a cart with a banner passed, Mr. Bomer’s horse became frightened and the child was thrown out and seriously hurt. Mrs. C.C. Baker of Weatherford, who had been visiting her sister. Miss Dixie Cullum at Aspermont and also Mrs. D.S. Cullum and other relative in Stamford, in company with her sister, Miss Dixie. Frederick Ward’s lecture last Friday night in the City Hall on Shakespeare and his plays was very much enjoyed by a large audience. This entertainment closes the season for the Rice Bureau. The Whitney Bro., failed entirely to meet their engagement owing to the illness and death of their father. All consumers wishing to sprinkle will be permitted to do so, by making application for such privilege and paying for same in advance at the regular rate and abiding by the rules of this company. -- Stamford Water Works & Electric Light Company I have sold my interest in the grocery business of Dean and Duncan. Roma Foy Born - to Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Scurry, a boy, 9 lbs., 11 o’clock Thursday morning, May 25, 1905. The bridge over the big canyon this side of Albany was washed out by a flood yesterday morning. At the school board meeting Monday night, Miss Lela Morris was elected to the position of First Assistant. Mrs. Lockett was elected primary teacher. The other places in the faculty were not filled. Our old friend Stoction Henry called at the news. Stock has married.
