Stamford has immense cattle interests, many cattle being fed by Swenson Brothers an others at the oil mill. A new artificial lake has just been finished which will given the town permanent water in abundance through an excellent waterworks also owned by the Townsite company. The rapid development and substantial growth of Stamford is due largely to Swenson Brothers who spare neither effort nor money to make the Stamford country the garden spot of Texas. Two years ago Stamford had the honor of entertaining the woman’s Texas Press Association. The next district meeting of the State Federation of Woman’s clubs will be held in Stamford. Elevation is 1,700 feet making the climate delightfully cool in summer - free from malaria and mosquitoes. No fishing or hunting will be allowed in the Conrad or Zug ranches. J.A. Matthews The Central Texas Press Association has been changed from Sunday, June 4th to Monday, June 5th. Meeting at the First Baptist church with Elder L.J. Mims of Waco assisting the pastor. Henry Carter was shot and killed by Oscar Roberts near the depot in Comanche, Wednesday morning, May 24th. The trouble arose over pasturing town cattle. Stamford City Ordinance Passed Establishing the Fire limits in the City of Stamford in regulating the building and maintaining of chimneys and flues and the erection or placing of buildings. J.M. Prude, City Secretary J.R. Sledge, Mayor Rev. Berry Smith, of the colored Methodist church preached in the room north of the News last Monday night to the white and colored folks. Bro. Smith is a preacher after the old style, and his sermon was very much enjoyed. Decoration Day The procession was formed and moved to the Cemetery. The graves of Mr. John Henderson and Mr. W.J. C. Grayum were the first decorated as they were the only confederates buried there. Other graves were then decorated. Col. Farmer, Capt. Fisher, and Mrs. J.P. McDaniels were the movers in getting it up. Recital was given by Miss Byars in the City Hall. From Liberty Rev. W.H. Bateman preached at the school house last Sunday. James Crone of Smith county is prospecting. Grandma Tunnell is visiting her son A.C. Tunnell. , Local and Personal The foundation is being put in for the Swenson gin. Mr. J.O.P. Edmonson renewed. D.O. McRimmon Mercantile Co. Foster of Merkel were here last week closing a deal in which Parten traded the Stamford Livery stable for property in Merkel. Lawyer Craig of Snyder has moved to Anson. Points from Plainview During the electric storm on Friday Miss Pearl Miller was shocked by lightning. Mr. John Clark had a good horse killed. Mr. Overby and family attended the concert at Curtis’ school house. Picnic at the Pamplin Pasture, Saturday, June 3rd. Grandma Holmes is on sick list. Our new friend and musician, Mr. Freeman of Wetunka, I.T. entertained. Mr. Gilvert Randel of Flat Top ranch hitched his horse at the usual place. The Plainview choir will meet at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Batley’s. Miss Willie Fuller has accepted the position as teacher of Plainview School next term. From Sunny Side We attended the marriage of Mr. Dave Glenn and Miss Francis Arnold in the Methodist church at Fairview, May 28th, 8 o’clock p.m. in the presence of a large congregation. Elder B.F. Dixon officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Noble, of near Flat Top, spent Sunday with Mrs. Noble’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Phelps. Parson Thompson of Abby preached at the school house. Robert Wilkinson of Stamford and his mother were out. Sunday School is under the supervision of Mr. Glenn.
