The men who are writing the early history of West Texas have great difficulty in settling on the time when Fort Phantom Hill was burned and abandoned. Some claim that it occurred some time prior to Feb. 15, 1855, Don H. Biggers, who has given considerable study of the early days of West Texas, claims that it was burned about the 20th of Feb. 1861. The strange part of it is that the gentlemen writing about it give the statements of men who claim to have been there when the Fort was destroyed. This little fact of history shows how difficult it to establish beyond question the history of a country even within the recollection of men. J.M. Town of Lueders is overhauling his gin.
