Griffin Mr. Newcomb killed T.M. ____ by cutting his throat and stabbing him to the heart last evening at Fort Griffin. He was arrested and placed in jail at Albany. Mr. Hart shot himself with both barrels of a double-barrel shotgun at his home near Morgan, last Sunday and died instantly. G.W. Brown of Funston was in Stamford Monday and sold cotton. Payne has been here four years and came from Dallas county; D.B. Swindle has been here 9 years and came from Coryell county; J.R. Higgs has been in the county 15 months and came from Harris county; G.W. Betterton has been here ten months from I.T. The Agent is now at Nugent. T.J. Carr is the accommodating postmaster and keeps a drug store. Woodson and Matthews have a blacksmith shop. W.E. McCanant has a store. C.J. Monroe and son have a large store. A.R. Hailey is the gin man. Dr. T.H. Godwin is the physician. The Dr. kindly took care of the agent. He found Mrs. Godwin a most excellent lady and she and her husband gave the agent a hospitable entertainment that he will not soon forget. A.J. Duches has been in the county 8 years and came from Williamson county; R.W. Reynolds has been here 16 years and came from Ellis county; Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds gave the agent his dinner. Walter Long has been here 13 months and came from Tennessee. W.B. Ware has been here 16 years and came from Navara county; Mr. and Mrs. Ware have a fine boy who came to stay at their home. Sam Williams has been here 13 years and came from Limestone county; B.B. Long has been here one year and came from Tennessee. C.L. Hi(paper torn) has been here one year and came from Erath county; E. Lewis has a good horse and buggy and has been in the country 2 years. T.H. Rowland; R.T. Spencer has been here 2 years; T. Bates has been here one year coming from Erath county; W.P. Reece has been here 2 years; W.S. Hatley has been here 8 years coming from Bell county; S.W. Steward has been here one year coming from Taylor county; S.M. Henry has been here 15 years and came from Arkansas; R.S.Palmer has been here 5 years and came from Alabama. Mr. Palmer kindly kept the agent over night and treated him most kindly. W.P. Cox; S.T. Powers has been three years in the country and came from Eastland county; T.H. Bacum has been here 3 years and came from Limestone county; Dr. E.H. Rowell has been in Jones county 15 years; E.F. Rowell been here 15 years and came from Denton county; W.M. McDuff has been here 5 years and came from Hill county; J.T. Fippo has been here 6 years and came from Alabama; We are now at Funston and met our friend T.O. Rowland and J.A. Abernathy and others; J.W. Fielder has been here 17 years coming from Williamson; Mrs. B.V. Crain has been here 5 years and came from Arkansas; R.L. Day has been here 16 years coming from Bell county; C.B. Roberts has been here 34 years coming from Tarrant county; Mr. Roberts took the agent to dinner and treated him as kindly as he could wish. Mr. Roberts has an interesting and intelligent family and the agent will be sure to go that way again if he should be in the country near the middle of the day. D. Anderson, another old settler has been here for 20 years came from Ellis count; J.W. Starkley has been here 4 years and came from Limestone county; A. Brown has been here 5 years and came from Louisiana; H.H. Williams has been here 6 months and came for the I.T.; C.W. Williams has been here 15 years and came from Virginia; J.R. Moore has been here 24 years and came from Colorado; Jeff Trammell who with his brother and sister lives in the Spring Creek neighborhood. Chas. Nehring has been here 3 years coming from Williamson county; H.H. Jared has been here 15 years and came from McLennan county; S.R. Pogue has been here 3 years and was from Caldwell county; The agent now reached Stamford again and felt that he had been among friends for a week, and would try to make it back to see them again. Local and Personal C.V. Sayles have opened a printing company and will start a paper. Will Gay left Thursday to join her husband in Oklahoma. G.R. Speilhagen left on the train for San Antonio for his family. He will locate in Stamford and build a residence. While in Stamford be sure to call on C.L. (Dock) Rogers, for the very best hand made Saddles and Harness. Rev. Sides filled the pulpit of the Methodist church last Sunday. Mrs. Medzgar with the Welch children, left Thursday morning for Abilene. Kert Keen taking them over in carriage. Miss Anna Burns and Miss Zuba Turner of the Corinth community were in Stamford. Dr. E.R. Adamson and wife of Anson left on the train Thursday to visit friends at Mexia, Texas. D.M. Smith who has been visiting his son for some time left Thursday for his home at Jefferson, Texas. Mr. Mayfield, the engineer who was hurt in the wreck near Morgan died soon after the wreck. Mr. Wright lost his leg at the knee and the fireman is dangerously scalded. Profs. J.W. Acuff and W.D. Everidge who taught a singing school in Stamford left Wednesday for their home in Waco. Mrs. Sam Keiker, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Glen Rector for sometime left on the train Tuesday for her home at DeLeon. Miss Lilas Penick left Monday morning to enter Peabody Institute at Nashville, Tenn. Miss Lilas completed the course of the Stamford High school last year. G.W. Graves and E.M. Florence; who live at DeLeon and had been at Pinkerton to see relatives who were sick. They said Frank Florence at Pinkerton had lost two of his daughters from slow fever recently. One daughter was a married lady, Mrs. Ella Wright. There was serious wreck of a freight train near Morgan Tuesday. The engine was turned over and the engineer Mayfield fatally hurt. Byron Wright, a young man well known in Stamford, and fireman Arnold were both seriously injured. It was not known what caused the wreck, perhaps the track spreading. Mr. Wright’s father left on the train Tuesday to see his son. J.T. Stricklin called at the News office. Mr. Stricklin, recently moved from Grandview to the Sunnyside neighborhood and will teach the school at that place. Mr. Stricklin is an old reader of the News. Wednesday, City Marshall, Geo. Flournoy received a phone message from Lon Cunningham, deputy sheriff of Taylor county, saying that constable Redell had shot and killed Benson Reece, a brick mason who worked on the building on the west side until Tuesday when he went to Abilene to attend the West Texas Fair. Pinkerton Notes There is quite a lot of sickness in our neighborhood, Mr. Frank Florence, Mrs. Norton, and Miss Huldah Draper being on that list, also Mr. Cap Bailey has had quite a spell of slow fever. Our community was made sad last Thursday on account of the death of Miss Minnie Florence age 16, she was a sweet girl whom everyone loved, the funeral services were held at the Baptist church conducted by Rev. J.T. Nickelson. Mrs. Mills and daughter Eva are visiting in Jones county. Mr. Edd Terrell and Miss Stella Nisbert, on their way to party at Mr. Moore’s. Mrs. Vernon is visiting her daughter Mrs. Denson of the Foster neighborhood. Dr. Reagan is moving his store to Rule this week. Mr. Brown is not our Postmaster. The Baptist people have changed their Sunday school from the evening to the morning, having their church completed, prayer meeting on every Saturday night. Mr. Emory Menefes has the honor of starting a young man’s prayer meeting during our protracted meeting. Anson All-Sorts Uncle H.G. Carlton, an honored citizen and old settler of Jones county died near Funston at his home, last Saturday and was buried with Masonic Honor Sunday in the Funston cemetery. A throng of people were there to witness the services, Dr. G.C. Rankin Editor of the Texas Christian Advocate, of Dallas preached to a crowded house Sunday night. F.B. Gailey has returned from Hunt county where he had been to attend the last days of his only brother who died at Caddo Mills, Texas, with typhoid fever. Judge and Miss Jennie Buie are down from Stamford looking after their property interest in Anson and on the Buie farm south of town. John Taylor of Aspermont was here today and Mrs. Jim Owens his sister-in-law returned home with him to visit her mother and other relatives. Judge B.B. Greenwood had business in Anson Saturday. Mrs. M.H. Frances was up yesterday from her Clear Fork farm. A seven pound girl baby No. 2, has arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. P. Sinson. Jim is happy and says he is complying with the Roosevelt plan. R.K. Hinds, father of Stamford’s old denizen Ed Hinds, was here to day from his farm in eastern Jones county. J.G. Setzer, ex-county commissioners, was here to day. Mr. Setzer has sold his home in the extreme eastern part of the county and is on his way to Fisher county prospecting. Dr. E.H. Rowen of Funston was in town yesterday, visiting his son, Anson’s new dentist. Jack Landthrip’s Hotel is rapidly climbing toward the heavens and there are several new residences. The Railroad surveyors are some where in the shinnery country between here and Abilene, making an entirely new and different route from any of the old original surveys. Anson’s Lyceum course will open Saturday night of the week with Charles R. Lane of Atlanta, Georgia, the Analysis of Laughter. Anson has over 130 Woodmen, nearly as many Odd Fellows, a hundred Knights of Pythias, and something like a hundred Masons. Funston News “Asleep in Jesus, O how Sweet!” The angel of death entered the home of Grandpa Carlton and bore his sainted spirit away Sept. 23, 1905. O it is so sad to part with those we love. Zeda Warren is very low with the slow fever. J.A. Ballard’s little son is sick.
