S.M.S. Cattle at the International Mr. Hastings has landed the second prize for his S.M.S. carload display of fat cattle. Mr. Hastings went for the first, but was cheerful over the success attained. The first prize went to the Angus exhibit of Krambeck Bros. The following prizes were won by the S.M.S. Ranch cattle: Dan W. Black, of Lynon, Ohio, who feeds cattle from the S.M.S. ranch, took the first prize offered in the Hereford special class for yearlings, and Funk Brothers & Co., took the first Swenson special prize for champion yearling feeders. J.B. Camp’s feeders took the second Swenson special and C.C. Judy and J.E. Penhill were third and fourth respectfully with their exhibit. W.C Guthrie, one of the best known and best liked young men in Fort Worth, was placed under arrest yesterday morning shortly after 8:30 o’clock by Deputy Sheriff Senter of Stonewall county. Before any of Guthrie’s friends were apprised of his arrest Deputy Sheriff Senter had him on a west bound train headed for Aspermont. The deputy sheriff had a warrant for his arrest, charging complicity in the death of on McGaughey, a wealthy ranchman of Haskell and Stonewall counties, who died about two months ago, it is thought, from the effects of poisoning. The friends of Guthrie here firmly believe that some fearful mistake has been made in associating this young man in even the most remote manner with the death of McGaughey. Deputy Sheriff Senter also had a warrant for the arrest of J.C. Hills, who has been a clerk in the State National Bank and who boarded with the mother of Mr. Guthrie on Pennsylvanian avenue. Hills, however, left the city some four or five days ago. His accounts with the band are entirely straight. From the best information obtainable it appears that Guthrie was invited last September by Hills to go with him to a ranch in which Hills was interested in Stonewall and Haskell counties. Guthrie and been planning to go with the party that was being gotten up by W.G Turner to spend a week at a lake in Dallas county, which party after being twice organized, finally abandoned the trip. This was last September. Guthrie spent something more than a week with Hills on the ranch and then returned home, Hills returned later. Hills, it appears, was in partnership of some kind with McGaughey. The morning that Guthrie left the ranch in Stonewall county to return home, Hills left for Haskell. About 24 hours after Guthrie left the ranch McGaughey died. Hills afterward returned to the ranch and then returned to this city and resumed his duties as clerk in the State National Bank. -- Record Sheriff Senter came in with his prisoner Wednesday evening. Thursday, the attorneys, Chas. Steele from Anson, for the prosecution, and Judge McConnell, from Haskell for the defense consulted as to the possibility of the prisoners waiving examination and making bond or standing a preliminary trial in Stamford, but it was decided that there could be no jurisdiction in the case only at Aspermont. Later - By writ of Habeas Corpus, the above case was taken before District Judge in Haskell and Mr. Guthrie’s bond was fixed at $5,000.
