R.W. Lewis, from new Mexico came in on the last train to begin meeting at the pavilion near the Methodist church. Jud Jinglings. John Cocburn went to Stamford. Henry McCulley of Stonewall county was in Jud. R.F. Hood was trading in the Banner town of the Orient. Musical and ice cream supper at Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Miller’s home. Bro. Alvis of Pinkerton, delivered one of his good sermons at Cook Springs. Mr. and mrs. C.H. Miller of Stamford was here. Jim Lane has sold his crop and will move to Bandera. Mr. Mallow has sold out and moved to Blanket. A.M. Allen is having a residence erected at Jud where he is in the Mercantile business. Mr. Davis and wife were trading in Rule. J.M. Clayton and family of Idella were visiting relatives. 600 old Confederates were removed from the pension rolls during the next six months, by death. The old boys are fast passing away. Mr. Bumpass has purchased 15 lots in the town and that he will erect a nice cottage on each of them and use them as rent house. Yesterday was children's day at Spring Creek. The Haskell Herald, Vol. 1, No. 1 made its appearance at the New office today. The Herald is 8 pages all home print. E.B. Abernathy, Jr. is the Editor and Publisher. Works has begun on the steel tower for Stamford. It will be 120 ft. high, and on it will stand a steel tub that will hold 50,000 gallons of water. Haskell Doings The Wichita Valley Railroad is reported 5 miles this side of Munday. A mass meeting was held Wednesday to obtain the location of the proposed Methodist College. A committee was appointed to solicit donations. Haskell is going to make a might effort to capture the College. Sheriff J.W. Collins is back east. T.B. Stockard a prospector for Louisville, Ky., left Stamford this morning for his home. The Halls Musical company will give their show tonight and tomorrow under their tent on the east side of square. The pavilion by the M.E. Church is now seated, lighted, and otherwise made ready for the meeting recently begun at the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Lewis is getting up quite an interest among the children with his illustrated sermons. Bradshaw left this morning for their home at Brenham. The Albany Telephone Company is putting up several telephones at Avoca. G.R. Moore of Aspermont came in Saturday. L.C. Kenyon was prospecting and returned home to Cooper. Mr. N. Leavitt left this morning for Lueders to see about rock for his new building. Mrs. C.F. Shipp and Mr. C.M. Duggan left this morning for Denton to visit their mother. Miss Zoe Douthit who is attending the Summer Normal at this place. Messrs. M.D. Webb and S.F. Terry of Blooming Grove, Texas are prospecting. Mrs. H.G. Nold left today for Shawnee, O.T. where her mother is ill. The W.T. Singley music Company will furnish the presbyterians one of his best organ s for the meeting. The Kirkpatrick girls who have the show at the Opera House have returned to their homes in Cisco. Open Air Concert at the Stamford Inn Greatly Enjoyed - Music by the Stamford Cornet Band (from Saturday’s Daily) The population of Stamford is more than 4,000 on the town site proper by the actual census compiled by City Marshall Flournoy. There were also 70 dwellings within one quarter mile radius of the town site or say 400 people and all this in six years. The farmers living near McCaulley, Jones county have organized a fruit growers’ associations and have order 15,000 trees for fall planting, says Mr. J.A. Forbes. Local and Personal G.H. Johnson who has been visiting at Rule for her home at Granbury. Miss Dwina Park has been visiting at Haskell and went home to Moran. Mr. E.M. Cushenbery left this morning for Walnut Springs to visit his daughter. Mrs. J.M. Carpenter wh has been visiting in Stamford left for her home at Weatherford. Mrs. A.C. Hunter who has been visiting Mrs. J.A. Hart of this city for her home in Waco. C.B. Morris and family have been visiting at Rule and left for home in Granbury. M.D. Webb and S. Terry returned from Anson. J.O. Kelly one of Stamford’s oldest citizens is on the News. We are informed that Anson is not in the race for the Methodist college, but that she will give her influence and money to Stamford in getting same, this shows how the Anson people have the interest of their county at heart. Mrs. J.A. Greer has been visiting at Palestine, she was accompanied by her little niece Miss Herley Zakery. Roswell Blankenbeckler the hustling boy for the Daily is bringing in subscriptions. Building has begun in earnest on the block destroyed by fire. Mrs. Ella Cooke, wife of John Cook died yesterday on east side. Mrs. Cook had been ill for several weeks with typhoid fever. Mrs. Cook was a devoted Christian having obeyed the Gospel in the year of 1894; and having lived a beautiful Christian life since that time, she leaves a husband and two children to mourn her loss. She was 27 years and a few months of age. Mr. Cook came to Stamford from Honey Grove about Christmas last year. One of the two children is at this time in bed in a very critical condition with the same fever as the mother had died of, The child will be taken to the home of Mrs. Wooten who lives in the Flournoy house near the Presbyterian church, and here is where the good people of Stamford can show some clarity by attending and visiting the sick child. The services were conducted at the Cemetery at 2:30 by Bro. Record of the Church of Christ who is conducting a protracted meeting under the tent on the east side of the square. The work has now begun at the fire stricken district to rebuild, there has been several contracts made for the immediate erection of some new brick and stone buildings. On the Leavitt corner the work has begun in the way of digging for the foundations, and the building material will be here as soon and as fast as it can be secured. Hamlin Dots Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Bowen are heart-broken over the death of their little daughter Inis. We laid her body to rest in the Plainview cemetery June 14. Mr. C.R. Holliday of Corsicana and Miss Tinnie Jones were married at the bride’s home near Neinda June 10. S.C. Vaughan officiating. Our son, S.M. Vaughan of Houston. Anson All-Sorts Col. R.L. Penick is here working for the college. Dr. Rowell has gotten back from Galveston. mrs. J.D. Perkins and daughter Miss Ruby are visiting at Henrietta. Capt. Millsay and C.H. Steele made a business trip to Roby. Frank P’Pool of Munday was here. Mr. Hopkinson of Munday was here visiting his duahgter Mrs. W.P. Williamson. Eiland passed through Stamford yesterday stopping over for atime with friends here, Prof. Eiland is on his way to Rule.
