Hester died at his home here Saturday morning after an illness of several weeks, in his death Haskell loses a noble citizen. The McConnell building on the north side of the square is being finished up this week. A house in the south part of town belonging to J.F. Stephens burned Sunday night. Judge Buie of Stamford was in Haskell. Sheriff Smith of Comanche county was in Haskell. Haskell is to have steam laundry in the near future, a gentlemen from Bell county was here making preparations. Prof. W.G. Blackmon came up this morning from Avoca. Mr. Williams has begun a new store house 24 by 60, which will make one of the largest rooms in the town. The new Methodist church is being pushed to completion. Ward L. Griffith has a new residence. Earnest Johnson and Rev. J.Y. Philley have just completed additions to their residences. The families of Stamford have rarely been more charming at the reception Mrs. Woodson tendered her sister, Mrs. Batjer of Abilene. Mrs. Milton Pattillo and Little Mary Woodson, held the card. In the receiving line stood Mrs. Woodson and her guest of honor Mrs. Batjer - then Mrs. Victoria Anderson, Miss Mamie Cullum, Miss Pauline McAlpine, and Miss Mamie Yates. After conversation the guests passed into the dining room and were greeted by Mesdames Sledge and Astin and served to pineapple punch by Miss Louise Batjer, and Miss Gladys Blanchette. In the next room they were met by Mesdames Scurry and Durrett and served to Cherry punch by Misses Irene Ashburn and Kate Goodwin. Record is still conducting his meeting for the Christian church. There has been one baptism and the prospect is good. One of the objects of the meeting is the erection of a new church house on the corner of Moran and Wetherbee streets. A part of the material for this house is on the ground. Jessie James Ledbetter, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Ledbetter, who lives on the east side, age one year, five months and one day, died at 4 o’clock yesterday morning, was buried at 4 o’clock yesterday evening. Rev. U.C. Howard conducting the services at the cemetery. Mr. Ledbetter has been in Stamford about one year, he is a railroad man. Local and Personals Mrs. D.R. Stewart is ill. Miss Jey Morris of our city left for Gorman. Seley Schafer of Lorena is visiting the family of E.H. Clark. M. Kerl, Olo Rhiel and L. Fox has been prospecting and left for Taylor. J.T. Shelton, wife and daughter of Lorena are visiting their sons, Joe and A.J. and their families. Jacob Hemphill and wife of Haskell left on the train to visit friends in Williamson county. J.C. Bryant and R.V. Colbert are at Hamlin today. T.D. Snipes, Cisco; J.C. Gibson, Waco; W.H. Bishop, Roscoe; and Ben Thompson, Valera; were here to be examined by the Board of Pharmacy. E.E. Lomax of Meridian has accepted a position in the wholesale department of the Penick-Hughes Hardware Co. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hightower have moved to Hamlin and Mr. Hightower will engage in a mercantile business. W.J. Brewington, we learn has traded for the Hart residence on Swenson Ave. Walter C. Fisher of Sterling City is here this week visiting his father, C.H. Fisher. Mr. Fisher passed his Board of Pharmacy certificate. Mr. J. Van Steenwyk of Hico, one of the purchasers of the Pioneer Mill and Elevator Co., of this place, came in on the train. Mr. Steenwyk is engaged in the milling business at Dublin. Mr. J.F. Wieser, another member of the milling company is expected on the evening train. From Wednesday’s Daily E.J. Wallace left for Cisco. J.P. Astin went down to Cisco. D.C. Webb, Jr., left for Cisco. W.R. Neal left to visit at Walnut Springs. A.V. Stanfield left to visit at Gorman. Mrs. Bert Potts of Anson is here visiting Mr. and Mrs. J.A. White. Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Terry left to visit friends at Coleman. C.F. Perrell of Palestine purchased paper to send to friends. Mrs. Julia Edge went down to Clear Fork. H.T. Smith left for home at Comanche. O.A. Matthews of Avoca was in town. Rev. J.H. Chambliss and wife came over from Haskell and went to Cisco. Jack Dial places the name of his brother, I.W. Dial, Kelley Okla. on New Roll. Mr. D. Kincannon left Stamford for Waco on business. P.H. Lankford who represents the Coca Cola people of Dallas left Stamford today. Will Peters of Lott came to the country a few weeks ago with Ed Dickson left for his home today. J.M. Lively returned from Dallas. Dr. Jones informs us today that the child of Mr. Cook is on the mend, the child's mother died a few days ago. W.L. Goodwin and brother, Albert, came last evening from Los Angeles, Cal. C.H. Roe, wife and children came up last night from Dallas where they had been to have their little girl treated for deafness. They formerly lived at Funston but are now living at Sagerton. W.H. Key who has bought 2,000 acres of land in Throckmorton county, left for his ome in Dublin. Mr. D.M. Treadwell of Abbie was in Stamford. Rev. W.H. Matthews, Methodist preacher in charge of Waxahachie, and his sister, Mrs. Nora Lamburth and her daughter, Eva, came in last evening on the train to Avoca. Nelson, recently elected Missionary Secretary of the M.E. church, south came on a visit to his brother Walter at this place. Dr. Nelson left for his home at Dallas. Harbin who has been visiting wm. Gaines, left this morning for Lueders. W.E. Bizzell and J.E. Raines made a business trip to Rule. Miss Ada Philley has been visiting in the city returned to her home in Avoca. Mr. and Mrs. T.L. Blanton have been here for the picnic and returned to Albany. H.R. Whitehead has been prospecting and returned to her home at Godley. The J.M. Lively, brick is still being rapidly constructed. Mrs. E.J. Hale who has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Hunt for her home at Oakwood. Misses Anna Lou Powers and Ethel Matthews returned to Albany. Little Lucile Dickenson has been sick with slow fever. Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Hinton of Abbie left this morning to visit friends in Bosque Country and to attend the Old Settlers’ Reunion at Meridian July 4th. Johnson of Marlin returned to Haskell. Master John Reynolds who has been visiting Conrad Zug left on the train for Reynolds Station and will go to Fort Worth. S. Cogburn of Jud is in town. Vaughn. Col. Morgan Jones and Mr. D.P. Bomar remained in town. Rev. S.J. Vaughn from Hamlin was in town. W.D. Nunn and family visit friends at Eastland. Mr. R.V. Colbert and Mr. D.P. Bomar came in last evening from Seymour. Prof. Cunningham says the teachers are well pleased with the Normal. Methodist College Children’s $1 fund. Owing to the death of our late manager, Mr. W.C. Lee, we have been obliged to dispose of our milling business at Stamford and have sold our entire plant to the Stamford Mill & Elevator Company. This company is composed of the Messrs. Wieser and other gentlemen of Hico, Texas. - Pioneer Mill & Elevator Co., N.H. Burns, vice-pres. Stamford’s Water Supply We have a new tank and 100 acres of pure and clear water which the town has so far not found it necessary to touch. The water shed of the large tank is kept perfectly clean and it all belongs to the Water Company. All well and spring water is strongly impregnated with lime or gyp, making it hard to use for washing and very unpleasant for drinking purposes. Stock Water on the Square Stamford will have an abundance of water on the public square for the people to water their stock when they come to town, this has been very much needed. There is a stone basin 6 feet in diameter and two feet deep being placed on the north-west corner of the square, this will be supplied with water from the main with a float valve which will insure an abundant supply. Martin, representing the Farm and Ranch also Holland’s Magazine is now stopping at the pleasant home of Mr. J.T. Sharp. Someone broke out the large plate glass window in the corner of the Pattillo building with a hard instrument. The Methodist College Situation Committee Appointed and Growing Interest in the Site of Location. The District Conference of the Abilene District met in Anson last Friday and is yet in session. Principal speaker was Judge Tillet of Abilene. The following committee was elected to represent the District in the conference with the committee from the Colorado District: Rev. J.R. Morris, Rev. J.A. Biggs, and Bro. Avery of Aspermont. The Presbyterian Meeting The tabernacle meeting has its difficulties but is growing in interest. Mr. Lewis is a good preacher and desperately in earnest. Mr. C.B. Dale and Mrs. J.A. Hart, married yesterday evening, 4 o’clock at the residence of the bride on Swenson Ave., Elder F.S. Groner officiating. Mr. Dale has had a position with Penick-Hughes Co. for a long time as traveling salesman. At the residence of the bride’s brother, C.E. Sammons on McHarg Ave., Miss Irene Sammons and Mr. Harvey Mitchell of Colorado City were married, Sunday morning, 9:30 a.m., Rev. C.H. Ledger of Tye, Texas officiating. The bride and groom left on the 10 o’clock train for Colorado City where they will reside. The picnic at Abbie will be pulled off on the 4th of July at the old Round-Up ground, one mile west of old Fairview, three miles northeast of Abbie. Woodmen of the World Picnic A large Attendance, Speaking by the Different Candidates. Enjoyed by Young and Old The Woodmen of the World Picnic at New Hope yesterday was all that any one could wish to expect from a loyal and highly appreciative people, the program was carried out in every way perfectly, and the Woodmen all have a very solemn thought as well as one of the most pleasant on which to reflect in years to come. The Stamford Concert Band had been arranged. Hon. G.L. Davenport of the popular law firm of Davenport & Martin, of Stamford acted in the capacity of conductor of ceremonies for the deceased at the cemetery. The march from the church yard to the graves was made up of the chappers of the New Hope, Stamford, and other near by camps, with the Band. C.C., J.H. Whittington opened the ceremonies, after when Rev. F.S. Groner, pastor of the Baptist church in Stamford delivered a most worthy and appropriate address. Speakers of the day were: T.L. Blanton, J.P.
