Rev. R.B. Evans conducted the funeral service at the residence on south street. Barton Penn and wife came in on last night’s train. Barton is an old time Stamford boy and an old time News man. He has been gone for more than a year and had in the mean time finished a business course and best of all secured a life partner, having married Miss Oneita Anderson, daughter of Dr. S.J. Tippitt, Mrs. Lula Womack, S.F. Worley. In yesterday’s paper we announced the settlement of the Farmer’s Warehouse for Stamford. The cotton market of Stamford has attracted the widest attention. Daily News - 10c per week. County Judge O.E. Oates has completed the scholastic population of Haskell county for 1906. The total is 2391 against a total of 1640 in 1905. - Free Press Swenson Bros. of Stamford, Texas announce that the Jane Wilson League, 10 miles north of Haskell, Texas, will be cut up into farming tracts to suit purchaser. The Jane Wilson League is on the edge of the Knox County Prairie, one of the oldest and best agricultural districts in Haskell County and is itself very rich farming land. It has been owned by the Swenson Family since come time in the forties and was bought by S.M. Swenson under the advice of a frontier army officer friend who explained that it had a lake on it, and in his notes on maps made many years before Northwest Texas promised to be an agricultural country, is found the comment “Don’t sell this land it is rich and has a lake on it.” No member of the Swenson Family had ever seen the Jane Wilson League until last fall when Mr. E.P. Swenson drove over it. Mr. Van Steenwyk, manager of the Stamford Mill & Elevator Co. at Stamford called at the News office. The mechanics are at work and much of the new machinery has arrived. There will soon be quite an addition to the elevator room. Mr. Van Steenwyk said they had received 10,000 bushels of this years wheat. The Stamford Mill Co. is composed of experienced mill men, having mills in Hico, Hamilton and Dublin. Good second hand saw mill for sale cheap. - Walter Samples When the Bids Close The Bids for the Methodist College will close Thursday, July 12. All bids must reach Colorado City by the night of Saturday, July 14th. Stamford City Ordinance establishing the fire limited in said City and is hereby so amended as to include within said limits the North West one fourth (N.W. 1/4) of block 18 and the South West one fourth (S.W. 1/4) of block 17 in said city of Stamford Texas, - 21 June, 1906. A little walk around Stamford will convince one of the rapid and general growth of the town, every where there is evidence of growth, of improvement on the old buildings. On the north border of the town there is perhaps a greater number of new houses going up than in any other part. fIf one has not been in that section for a few weeks, he will be surprised to find good houses up and occupied where there was nothing at all when he saw it before. The town has far over reached the town section and there are a great number of houses on what is known as the “Bunkley addition.” Rev. W.S. Wheeler, ex-clown and State Agent of the Humane society, has been in town preaching on the streets. He left this morning for Albany. Mrs. Jack Baldwin and daughters, Misses Maybelle and Elizabeth of Haskell, stopped last night with Mrs. W.J. Galbraith and left on the train to see friends in East Texas. Thompson has been prospecting and returned home to West, Texas. N.P. Norris of Ardmore, I.T. has been visiting with his brother J.P. Morris at Sagerton. F.H. Bosse, of Brenham has been look over the country with a view of purchasing. Rev. U.C. Howard will occupy the pulpit for both services Sunday. R.M. Dickson from Waco came in last night and will put in a new and elegant livery outfit in the old Hale stable. The former livery stock of that stable has been purchased by Dr. W.N. Bunkley and will be consolidated with the Stamford stable. Mr. Dickinson is an old livery man and will give the town the best of service. Miss Lottie Graves left for Denison. R.H. Ferguson and wife have been in Stamford for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson are old citizens of Stamford and have been living in San Augustine for several years. They left for home on the train. Miss Mae Goodwin is sick with typhoid fever. Livery Stable Moved B.J. Billington has moved his livery rigs and stock to the building formerly occupied by Burton-Lingo Lumber Yard. He will on or about the 25th move to the Stamford Livery Stable. Avoca Items Miss Ora Hargrove and Miss Kate Crosthwaite are visiting in Rule this week. Mrs. Bessie Culwell returned Monday from a visit to relatives in Okla. Mrs. Maggie Slover of Weatherford is visiting relatives in Avoca. The Avoca Mercantile Company have about finished their new building and will be ready for business as soon as their stock arrives. W.D. Kite is putting up a new building on the south side to be occupied by E.G. Jones, photographer. Wardell Griffith has finished his new residence. J.H. Huffaker is putting in his new refrigerator business. Mrs. Nora Lambeth and her daughter, Miss Eva are visiting Mrs. Lambeth’s brother W.R. Matthews. Rev. C.D. West is absent holding a meeting at Fairview. W.L. McCulley who has been visiting his sister, Mrs. H.E. Grimes, has returned to his home in Hill county. J.S. Culwell left Wednesday to attend the Quarterly meeting at Fairview. J.H. Russell and Mrs. Alice Davis of Palmer are visiting the fmaily of J.H. Huffaker. Mrs. Pierce of Bradon is visiting her sister, Mrs. H.E. Grimes. Dr. Ross, of Washington, D.C. has bought another track of land in the Swenson pasture and also invested in town property. W.W. Whitley who has been living at Haskell for the last few moths has moved to Avoca. P.O. Sandling left Monday to work with the Albany Telephone Co’s. constructing line west. Funston The new church at Funston is nearing completion. The singing Sunday at Buiners School house was enjoyed. Mr. Mitchell the Funston blacksmith has sold out to G.H. and T.D. Hyatt who will take charge January 1, 1907. Mrs. Itson of Roanoak is here visiting their cousin, Mrs. T.C. Owens. Bradley to Miss N. Gibson and W.H. Mayfield to Mrs. Maud Clay. Walter Johnson is here at the bedside of his father. Harry Butler is having a new home erected. J.W. Leake of Navasota, and brother of W.E. Leake, came in on last evening’s train. F.A. Arnold candidate for county attorney was in Stamford today. Mr. Arnold came over last evening and did some work in the Odd Fellows Lodge. Local and Personals From Tuesdays Daily Mrs. Cleve Hall who has been visiting Mac Hall left for home in Eddy. Melvin Spall has been prospecting and has returned home to Eastland. Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Richardson have moved to their new house on Swenson Ave. R.F. Honea went down to Cisco to meet Mrs. Honea and Robert who are returned from a visit to Louisiana. Mrs. Marshall Pierson and miss Edna Rogers who have been visiting in Haskell left for Dallas. Rev. U.C. Howard and D.H. Johnson, returned from the Presbytery at Sabano, Eastland county, last evening. J.C. Leven and Watts left this morning for Leonard, Texas where they will reside. Judge C.C. Ferrell was over from anson and was placed on the Honor Roll. Judge M.J. Hickey of Richmond, Fort Bend county is in Stamford looking at the town and country. J. Halprit left for Whitney. Spencer the lumber man has decided to make Stamford home for a time at best. His family came in last evening. Rev. U.C. Howard and Mr. D.H. Johnston returned Monday evening from the meeting of the Presbytery at Sabanno and report an unusually good time and good meeting. Rev. Wm. Piercy of Rising Star, the presiding officer (Moderator) for the past half year and an opponent of the Union, preached the opening sermon - a good and forcible sermon. Mr. Howard was received into the body on letter of recommendation from his former Presbytery. Ruling Elder, D.H. Johnson, was seated as representative from the Stamford church. Dr. J.A. Ward was elected Moderator. The committee on Pastorates and Supplies were instructed to secure the services of Rev. J.Y. Philley in applying certain vacant pastorates. Rev. W.E. Green of Sabanno with ruling elders, J.C. McCaskill of the Anson church, J.W. Christopher of Abilene, F.W. Meloin of Ranger, and L.M. Buie of Stamford compose the Presbyterial Missions committee. Sunday was a day to be remembered. A good sermon by Dr. Ward in the morning. The protracted meeting for the Methodist church will begin on the 4th conducted in the tabernacle. Mrs. G.M. Evans left on the train this morning for Colorado City with Stamford sealed bid for the college The livery outfit of Mr. R.M. Dickson came in this morning at 4 o’clock and has been placed in the stable, the teams look some what drawed from being on the road so long. Central Texas Press Association’s Annual Excursion leaves Waco next Monday morning. We were pained this morning to hear of the death of Dr. A.H. Johnson which occurred at his home at Anson last evening from uremia. Dr. Johnson was one of the old landmarks of this country, having preached and practiced medicine in this country for years. He was one of the prominent citizens in the county. The father of Walter and Curtis Johnson of our city. Dr. Johnson since we came to the country and have always found him a high toned Christian gentleman. The management of the Daily News is making a special effort to increase the circulation and we are now prepared to turn out 1000 copies each day if we can get the list. We are anxious to get the Daily in the home of every farmer in Jones county. Local and Personals From Saturday’s Daily The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Walker, Agnes, 3 years of age is in very critical condition and may not live very much longer. Mr. J.W. Cook, whose wife recently died, is now at the home of Mrs. Wooten, seriously sick. Dr. E.O. Brewington has decided to return to Stamford and resume the practice of dentistry. He will come about August 1, 1906. Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Miss Ena Steele of Anson left to visit friends at Cleburne. W.E. Raney who has been living at Carney left for Stephenville. Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Chambers left for Sulphur springs where they will reside. Mark Miller has been visiting his parents for some time left this morning for Madell, I.T. Miss Gladis Morrell who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.D. Morrell, left for Milford. Mrs. W.J. Galbraith called at the News. Mr. and Mrs. Galbraith have been in the country many years and have been closely related to its development. Mrs. J.J. Germany and her son, Jerry, who have been visiting Mrs. C.C. Shell and A.B. Germany and their families left for their home at Mexia. D.M. Hart told the News. He was just in from the Wichita Extension and that the work in steel laying and grading was pushing his way at a rapid rate. The steel gang is this side of Goree and the grading work is only a few miles out of Stamford. W.W. Goddard, representing the Modern Order of Woodmen, called at the News today. Mr. Goddard is an old time newspaperman in the Avoca neighborhood. The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Walker died Saturday night at 9 o’clock and was buried in the Stamford Cemetery last evening at 4 o’clock. She was three years of age and had only been sick a short time. The date of the U.C.V. Reunion will be August 29, 30, and 31. Abbie Picnic - July 4, 1906 Abbie Camp No. 1756 W.O.W. held their picnic in M.D. Harris’ pasture, two miles east of Abbie which was attended by about 2,000 people. There were a number of Woodmen from stamford, Anson, Hamlin and Neinda Camps. All under the management of Consul Commander J.M. Williford and Clerk, F.E. Benham. The program was carried out by Prof. W.A. Lewis followed by Attorney Davenport of Stamford. The brass band managed by F. Kutch, band master. Will open a Dental office in Stamford. - W.R Tyler, D.D.S.
