Wm. Piercy as pastor. R.P. Hart of Limestone county is looking at the country and visiting relative D.M. Hart. M. Georgia Knudson of Comanche, Texas, is visiting her sister, Mrs. J.R. Sledge, this week. Misses May and Lilly Posey of Austin are visiting Mrs. D.R. Stewart. We met this morning Mr. Emmerson Hough who is here for the purpose of securing data for a series of articles on the cattle industry in this country for the Saturday Evening post. Pierce Davis, foreman of the Tribune, returned from a business trip to Dallas. Music class will begin September 3 at Mr. Moody’s. -- Roma Foy Y.H. Nunn, the piano man, left for Haskell, on a weeks business trip. Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Wilson of Abbie returned from Valley Mills. Cols. McDaniel and Farmer, T.N. Hamilton. We met Mr. R.L. Penick this morning who showed us a telegram to Col. Chas. Hamilton with 50 or more names attached for a night train with sleeper out of Stamford to connect at Morgan with Santa Fe for Fort Worth and other points. Mrs. Fannie F. Ellis, who has been visiting her brother, Rev. R.B. Evans and family left today for Fort Worth where she will visit the family of F.J. Evans. On Friday afternoon in honor of Miss Mabel Lockett of Abilene the guests of Miss Abbott, Mrs. C.F. Shipp entertained in her hospitable home at luncheon a bevy of our young and beautiful gowned society girls of Stamford. Witherspoon of Crowell and Miss Janie Whitfield now of Crowell but formerly of Stamford were married. Rev. U.C. Howard officiated. Friends present: Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Johnson, Mrs. B.F. Whitfield, the brides mother, Miss Manning, Mrs. Binnings, Miss Carpenter, Mrs. U.C. Howard. The bridal couple will go to Fort Worth and then to Colorado. Miss Janie has been a popular young lady in Stamford. Miss Irby Taylor left for her home at Haskell. Miss Taylor has given up the music class in Stamford. J.W. Scurry, brother of R.W. Scurry and Mrs. S. Gay, and Prof. E.W. Tarrant came in on last evening’s train from Comanche for a short visit to relatives. Prof. Tarrant is from Brenham and is the Superintendent of the Brenham Public Schools and has filled this place for 15 years. Prof. Tarrant is an old educator in Texas having been president of the Chappell Hill Female College for many years before taking charge of the Brenham school. Edgar Berryhill, of Nugent, is in the city visiting with his brother, Earl Berryhill, of Wrights Livery Stables. W.D. Schenk of Iredell is here prospecting. Rev. C.D. West pastor of the Avoca circuit has been in Stamford today telling us about the Spring Creek camp meeting. J.T. Edmondson from Denton is here visiting his parents. J.W. Dean returned after an absence of several weeks for treatment for cancer. Mrs. Dean is afflicted with the same disease. Mr. and Mrs. J. Runnels and children were in Stamford today. They are the best people in this country and are prosperous farmers in the Spring Creek community. We are glad to meet Mr. and Mrs. P.M. Williams from Tahoka, they are on a visit to home folks. Rev. R.B. Evans, H.S. Abbott and Chas. Sammons left for fishing. We were glad to meet Miss Mabel Lockett in town. Miss Lockett taught in our school a few years ago. Mrs. B.S. McCurdy, who has been visiting the family of Rev. R.B.Evans returned home to Hico. Mr. S.C. Harris of the Nickel store has gone to Dallas on a business trip and while he is gone Mr. R.H. Langford has charge. On last evening as the day was fading away and the darkness was becoming ruler of the earth, Mrs. Ida Montgomery passed away. Mrs. Montgomery was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Strobeck. She led the life of a Christian. The interment will take place today in Stamford cemetery. Mrs. C.S. Wilson stopped at the News. Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Wilson have been in this country for many years and are prosperous farmers on the California creek south of town. We stopped in at Mr. L.E. Larche’s yesterday and he showed us a telegram announcing the death of his father at Tampa, Florida on last Thursday. Mr. Larche was an old citizen of Albany. He had reached an advanced age and had been in bad health for a long time. His wife died not long ago and he has been rapidly declining since.
