Bodies of Nance and Meaker found After Heroic Effort Cameron Nance was found Saturday night at 8 o’clock and Wallace Meaker at 3 p.m. Sunday. Never before in the history of the town has there been an occurrence that so deeply moved the people and aroused their sympathy as the drowning of Cameron Nance and Wallace Meaker last Saturday in the big tank, an account of which appeared in Saturday’s News. Rafts were constructed out of cross ties and all the boats in town were put into service. Long lines of ropes with hooks attached to them were dragged over the location. About 8 o’clock Saturday night the body of Cameron was caught by the drag hook and brought to shore. At 3:30 in the afternoon a hook on one of the long drags caught the pants of the boy and he was brought to the surface and to the banks. The body was taken to Penick-Hughes Co. and dressed for burial and then removed to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Robertson. Mr. Meaker father of the unfortunate boy remained at the lake Saturday night and was there Sunday till the body was found. The burial of Cameron Nance was from the family residence Sunday evening at 4 o’clock. Rev. R.B. Evans conducted the burial services. As the funeral train moved out on Swenson Ave. the procession bearing the body of Wallace Meaker came in. The inquest held over the bodies by Judge Dakan showed that there were no marks of injury on the bodies and death resulted from drowning. The body of Wallace was found much nearer the shore than was expected and he evidently made a heroic effort to save himself and perhaps thought he was in water not over his depth when from exhaustion he left himself down and was not able to recover. He had on a hunting jacket and was loaded down with shells and they also prevented his escape. Chas. Meaker and his wife and children have been for some time picking cotton for J.W. Barr on the old Bragg place in the Spring Creek neighborhood. Mr. Meaker came up at once after hearing of the death of his son, but the mother was so prostrated that she could not come. Pastor J.D. Kennedy reports a good day at Nugent Sunday. Besides holding the first service in their new building, he had the pleasure in the afternoon of uniting in marriage E.M. Berryhill and Miss Lillian Suddeth and M.L. Berryhill and Miss Kate Denton. From Wednesday’s Daily Norman Galbraith is now clerking for the Quanah Grocery Company at Quanah.
