Talley loses leg and Charles Helmke’s Ankle is sprained Last evening about 5:15 there was a wreck on the Central near the Davis tank, some distance west of Hamlin, in which O.B. Talley had an amputation. Chas. Helmke had his right ankle badly sprained. About 8 o’clock Saturday night the citizens of Hamlin were alarmed by the cries of fire and very soon almost the entire male population of Hamlin and few ladies were at the scene of the conflagration. The first alarm was sounded the dry goods and grocery house of D.O. Sauls was enveloped inflames which were beyond control, the town having no firefighting equipment. Taylor, Ira Wall, Miss Florence Mathews, Horace Kelley, Ruffie Smith. From Saturday’s Daily Miss Allie Poage was at the depot to meet her brother W.A. Poage from Albany. Jack Dial’s two boys, Rosewell and Lewis left for Lueders to visit their grandmother. J.S. Hanes, G.W. Hanes and W.P. Richey of Emberson, Texas are making Jones county their home. From Monday’s Daily Miss Nell Flynt and sister Mrs. Jim Roan have been visiting their sister, Mrs. R.T. Buie and returned home to Anson. Tuesday’s Daily J. Callicoate is the city Marshal. Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Keen of the Funston community received word that Mr. M.G. Rhodes of Brownwood, father of Mr. Keen died. His burial was in Brownwood and he was well known in this section. The School board is advertising for plans for their new $17,000 school building. Wednesday’s Daily Met with Mr. A.J. Swenson and he told us he was location a great many Swedes on the Swenson lands. He says there is a move to build a Lutheran church on the California Creek, some 8 miles south of Stamford. The building will cost $2,000. Old Bro. Craig has an abiding love for the children and several times during the year he gets up some nice affair with presents for the children of the town. Mr. Craig is one of our oldest citizens and is about 75 years of age. He served with honor in the Mexican and Civil wars and has scars from wounds received in each of these wars. He went to California in 49 and has in his possession a book giving an account of the hardships of that journey. From Friday’s Daily Marshal Flournoy arrested this morning C.C. Kraft under a writ charging forgery in Coleman Co. G.L. Davenport, as an attorney will leave in company with him tonight on the train for Coleman. Fred H. Manning has been sentenced to be hanged in Dallas February 1, 1907, for the murder of A. Riddle which occurred in September 1904. A Library for Stamford Woman’s Twentieth Century Club in Stamford made an effort to establish a public library in Stamford. A room was secured in the City Hall and the Ladies opened the doors two or three days a week. Interest waned, the room was soon closed, and the books moved out. The town needs a library. Thursday’s Daily Last night soon after dark the electric lights went out, leaving the town in darkness. The commutator in the dynamo burned out . Mr. Berthelot is doing all he can to have everything in working order tonight. Willie Harkleroad died this morning at 7 o’clock at the home of his mother, one mile south of town. Mr. Harkleroad was a young man of 22 years of age and came to Stamford about a year ago with his mother and one sister and located on one of the five-acre blocks. He came here for his health having consumption. He was a member of the Methodist church. The burial will be in the Stamford cemetery this afternoon.
