Cary, Monday Jan. 7, Sister Kirk was 35 years of age and Bro. Cary was 85 years old. Both were members of the Methodist church. - Sam C. Vaughn Baker-Bryant Company Stamford, Texas Local and Personal From Saturday’s Daily Mr. Moodie told us this morning that dirt would be broken the first of next week for the college building. Judge A.M. Helms, Chas. M. Taylor and L.J. Almand from Conyers, Ala. are old citizens of Stamford and are in for a visit. Recently the Fort Worth Record began to show to the people the horrible criminal condition of the section of that town known as “The Acre.” The exposures of the Record of the doings of that section, which is known to all Texas, it is hoped will wife the blotch off the fair name of Fort Worth. Young Baird Hung at Baird Pays penalty for murder of Miss Blakely Vargos pays for Crime Doomed Man Mad Speech from Gallows to Crowd of Spectators Baird, Texas, Jan. 4 - Alberto Vargos, convicted of the murder of Miss Emma Blakely was hanged here this afternoon. Sheriff Al Irvin sprung the trap. The crime for which Alberto Vargos paid the extreme penalty of the law was the murder of Miss Emma Blaekly at Baird, Oct. 19, 1906. Miss Blakely was employed as a waitress at the Signal hotel, at which place Vargos was employed as a dishwasher. Miss Blakley had been employed at this hotel several years, and was well liked and highly respected young lady, Vargos had come to Baird only a few weeks before the crime, stating he came from Zacatecas, Mexico. From Monday’s Daily T.M. Caton of Spring Creek was in town on business. Mr. Caton is the President of the State Bank of Avoca. Mr. Buie and bride arrived on last evenings train. Mr. Buie and Miss Pearl Hamm were married at Dewitt, Texas, Dec. 23, Miss Hamm was quite well known in Stamford. From Wednesday’s Daily Miss Myrtle Murphy of Lott is visiting her sister Mrs. T.P. Collier of Stamford. Dr. W.N. Bunkley and wife left for Abilene where the Dr. attends a surgery on Mrs. Wren Johnson of Avoca. The Aspermont Star changed management this week, and from now on will be edited and published by J.W. Thompson. The fire Department met last night being election night: Dr. J.R. Sledge, Chief; W.E. Whittington, Assistant Chief; W.D. Nunn, Secretary; W.W. Fuqua, Treasurer.
