We want to sell you groceries. Sadler & Owen, south side square. The corner stone of the Stamford Collegiate Institute will be laid on the 15th of this month. The Grand Master of the Masonic order in Texas will officiate. Mr. H.G. Nolds and family left last Saturday for San Francisco, Cal. This excellent family has been in Stamford for more than a year and Mr. Nolds has been assistant cashier in the First National Bank. We wish them success in their new home. Mrs. M.E. Whitson who recently came on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Vaden, died last Friday and was buried on Saturday evening in the Stamford cemetery. Rev. R.B. Evans performed the services. John M. Bone died last Saturday 1:30 p.m. and was buried in the Stamford cemetery Sunday evening. Bro. Evans performing the religious service. Mr. Bone was an old man and an old Confederate Veteran. Steel Hay press for sale. Apply to E.B. Schnider at the old Asher place. Local and Personal J.M. Thurman was in town. J.C. Bryant went to Rule. J.H. Huffaker of Avoca was in town. J.H. Crosthwait of Avoca was in town. T.W. Huff was in town Saturday and said that Penick expected to get a post office in the future. Tom Penick, post master of Rotan was in town. C.C. Hounsel, a prosperous farmer on R.F.D. 1, was in Stamford. J.A. Snodgrass who lives on R.F.D. 2 was in town. Joe Sample, an old citizen of the Sandersville neighborhood was in town. J.T. Key of Anson was in Stamford. Mr. Key has for years owned land in the Sunny Side neighborhood and sold it and moved to Anson. W.M. Herman was in town. D.A. Argenbright lives near Avoca. Peter Bradley, a freighter, who lived near Truby was killed Sunday six miles north of Abilene in a runaway accident which his team ran off with his wagon loaded with cotton meal and hulls. The hind wagon ran over him breaking his neck and he died instantly. He was unmarried. Throckmorton Times: Charley Hunter, who was in jail here for the theft of a lap robe taken from the Self livery stable, broke jail Tuesday night. The sheriff left the prisoner out of the cage. He managed to get up into the ceiling and then pried the wooden bars out of the ventilator and by means of a rope made his escape. Hunter secured the rope from the cots used in the jail. Each has a rope sewed in the hem to give them strength. He used a broken bottle to rip the hem. Last Tuesday night Ruth, the 13 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Atkisson was burned to death while kindling fire with coal oil. The family live north of town about half mile from I.N. Shadle’s place. She was starting a fire preparatory to cooking supper, when the oil ignited which set fire to her clothing. Heroic efforts were made by the family to extinguish the flames, but before anything could be done she was burned beyond description. Dr. Jordan was called in and did all that could be done, but the injuries were such that medical assistance proved of no avail, and death came at about two o’clock the morning following. The remains were laid to rest in the Aspermont cemetery Wednesday evening about 5:30. Mr. Atkisson was badly burned about the hands while trying to rescue his child and at present is suffering considerably. -- Aspermont Star The J.L. Thorton improved Russell’s big boll cotton. Sledge this week and he said that his name was put on the tick without his knowledge. Local and Personal F.J. P’Pool and his brother, C.H. went to Rotan this week. Misses Ophella Gibson and Ada Qualls of Sagerton were in Stamford. Dr. and Mrs. L.B. Roebuck of Avoca were in Stamford. Mr. R.R. Gibson of Sagerton was in Stamford visiting his daughter, Mrs. B.J. Stubbs. T.J. Green and family arrived in Stamford Monday from Tishomingo, I.T. They will reside in Stamford and Mr. Green will be connected with his brother, F.I. Green in the furniture and second-hand business. The election held Saturday to decide whether or not the people would tax themselves 15 cents on the hundred dollars for road purposes resulted in an overwhelming defeat. Marshal Flournoy made a raid Wednesday night on a house in town and captured quite a lot of whiskey and beer. W.L. Clark and C.N. Knight has bought the Nickel Store and are now invoicing and will take charge at once. The Lueders Vanguard of the first number has reached us. R.H. McCarty is editor and proprietor.
