The standard to be managed by Stamford Collegiate Institute is “The Best - of the West” and it will be the highest ambition of the faculty and the promoters of the College to make them come up to that - “Best in the West,” to make it known far and wide as an institution of learning not to be excelled by any of its pass. The children were eager to start to school again and they began to gather as early as 7:30 Monday morning. West Stamford School began with an enrollment of 68 which argues well for the success for the success of that school. The desks have not come yet, so the teacher are laboring under some difficulties. Sagerton Dots We are sorry to say that the people of Sagerton are very indifferent religiously. Neither of the three denominations could interest the Sagerton toughs like the two days barbecue of the 3rd and 4th which was a grand success. What kinds of place is Sagerton? We have three dry goods and grocery stores and another one ready to open, one hotel, one racket store, one blacksmith shop, one hardware and furniture store, one two-story brick building soon to be occupied by the Sagerton Bank and land is selling for $50 an acre. Johnnie Tunnell paid Stamford a visit. Fairview Notes Mr. and Mrs. Foote visited Mr. Gardner. College Notes Miss Bennett, teacher of Short Hand and Typewriting is in the City and can be consulted concerning the work of her department at the residence of C.M. Pattillo. Miss Clarah Frances Brown of Marshall, Mo., arrived in the City Thursday and will have charge of the Voice Department in the College. Miss Kate Martin of Wesleyan Female College, Ga. is here and will teach in the College. Misses Brown and Martin may be reached by phone at the residence of President Duncan. Mesdames Conger and Blankenbeckler, have opened a millinery stock in the Wagley Bros. store. W.E. Newman received the sad intelligence Wednesday night that his father who lives at Morgan was very low. Personals A. Maxwell and wife left for Abilene to visit with Mr. Maxwell’s daughter Mrs. C.E. Evans. Ed. Ivey and C.M. McCracken are prospecting in Sweetwater. Miss Sallie Jefferson of McConnell came in to take a position in West Stamford School. W.A. Adams living here left for Gunter to attend the Gunter College. The Stamford News Friday, May 31, 1907 Vol. 8, No. 14 (this issue was misplaced in the microfilm) The sad death of Miss Lila May Nichols, which occurred on May (unreadable). She was the daughter of W. and Callie D. Nichols who live 15 miles east of the city, and was 16 years of age. She was ___ Sunday, May 26th at Rock ___ school house., and was buried in the made in this new cemetery. The McCaulley Tribune is glad to state that McCauley is soon to have a first class water system and electric lights. Lee Glascock has been waiting to secure good and legal franchise to use the streets and alleys of McCauley. Married on August 26th, 1907 at 8:30 a.m. Mr. Walter Collier and Miss Frankie Crabtree. Rev. R.B. Evans officiating. Mr. Collier is a young man of sterling character, he became manager of the telephone in the thriving city of Munday. Miss Frankie is well known in Stamford and is the beautiful and accomplished sister of Mrs. J.A. Terry. Personals Will Ward of Rotan passed through to Dublin. T.R. McCann went to Lueders to take pictures. Miss Hazel Flynt of Anson, has been visiting her sisters, Mrs. R.T. Buie and Miss Dell Flynt. Dr. J.R. Scott, prominent dentist of Stamford, has moved to Rotan and put in an office there. S.C. Howard of Anson, was the guest of his niece, Mrs. J.E Duncan. Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Coker of St. Clair, brought their little girl over last Tuesday to be treated by Dr. Robertson. Gus Goodwin of Anson was the guest of Judge Buie. Miss Delia Qualls, returned home from a visit at Sagerton to her parents. She was accompanied by her brother, W.P. Qualls. Miss Ada Qualls, of Sagerton is the guest of her sisters, Mrs. C.E. Brown and Miss Delia Qualls. Mrs. S.H. Bruce and daughter, Miss Fisher, of Berryville, Ark., are expected to make their home in Stamford. Miss Fisher is an employee of the News. It was with the deepest of regret that we had to consent for our foreman, F.E. White, to go to Anson to take charge of the Jones County Talk, which he has purchased. Mr. White has been connected with the Stamford News for about 2 years. Rev. W.Y. Switzer and Miss Delora Ella Fair were united in marriage at the home of the bride, Thursday evening, Rev. Jerome Duncan officiating. Rev. Switzer has just finished a College course at the Southwestern University and is planning to enter the Northwest Texas Conference next Fall. Miss Fair needs no introduction to the people of Stamford. Kelley White, who has been associated with the News for a long time has gone to Anson to be with his brother, F.E. White. We regret very much to lose Kelly as his stay was not only a very pleasant one but profitable as well. Mrs. Rice of Walnut Springs, sister to Mrs. U.C. Howard is visiting. Tombstone in a church yard at Greenwich, England, is said to bear the following inscription: “Beneath these stones, Lies Malissa Jones; Her name was Smith, And was not Jones; But Jones was put to rhyme with stones..” The Bank of Lueders have got their new bank fixtures. The office is fenced off - teller and cashiers window. They said they had to sit up with Joe Smith, the popular cashier. -- Lueders Vanguard Mesdames J.F P’Pool, J.O. Moore and W.L. Durrett entertained with a reception in honor of their mother, Mrs. H. Davis of Anson and their sister, Mrs. W.P. Treadwell of Dallas, at the home of Mrs. P’Pool, on corner Webb and Oliver, on Tuesday afternoon. In a portrait contest, Mrs. Sugg of Gatesville, and Mrs. L.E. Malone were the successful contestants. Williams, Mrs. Jo Williams. Deal Closed for Cotton Oil Mill in Haskell Mr. A.F. Moffet returned this week and closed up the deal with the Haskell committee for the location of a cotton seed oil mill at Haskell. Mr. Moffett takes $20,000 and local parties take $25,000 stock in the mill, which is to be a three press mill with a daily capacity of 50 tons of seed. The stockholders are M.A. Clifton, G.R. Couch, M.S. Pierson, J.S. Boone, A.D. English, J.J. Stein, T.E. Ballard, H.G. McConnell, R.C. Montgomery, H.M. Rike, A.J. Smith, J.F. Pinkerton, O.E Patterson, F.G. Alexander of Haskell and A.F. Moffett of Belton. The officers elected are M.A. Clifton, president; R.C. Montgomery secretary and treasurer and A.F. Moffett, manager.
