About 3:15 o’clock on Wednesday morning the lumber yard of the Furgeson Manufacturing Co., situated near the depot of the Texas Central railroad in the north part of town, was discovered to be on fire. An alarm was at once given and the town aroused and the people assembled en masse at the scene of the conflagration, stimulated by the idea that it was the duty of every citizen. The fire, however, had gained such headway before it was discovered that little could be done to prevent the destruction of the lumber yard, but by strenuous and well-directed efforts the flames were held in check and prevented from spreading to the cars on the track of the Texas Central railroad and the depot building and the lumber shed on the west side of the yard was saved in a damaged condition. Two sheds, a piano, new buggy and a large amount of lumber and other building material were totally destroyed, all of which was the property of the Furgeson Manufacturing Company. The planing plant and machinery of this enterprising company were saved. The loss is estimated at $10,000, covered by insurance to the amount of $9,000. - Hamlin Herald.
