Cement Sidewalks are Going Down R.L. Penick and J.P. McDaniels are squarely in line on the sidewalk question. Splendid four foot sidewalks are now being put down fronting. The News intends to make the paper larger by 25 percent. Fire Company’s New Hose Team New Hose Wagon and Harness and Span of Horses Added to Fire Department The Stamford Fire Department yesterday completed purchase of the fine span of iron gray horses for the new hose wagon, and installed them in the temporary barn north of the city hall. The horses cost $500 and are certainly a handsome span. The department is now with her engine hose wagon and hook and ladder wagon, pretty well equipped to fight fire. Miller of Grayson County has opened a Cash Feed Business on the north side square. Stamford Grocery Co. North side square The remains of Mrs. B. Yates, accompanied by husband and daughter arrived on the morning train Saturday from Fort Worth, where Mr. Yates and Miss Dora had been for the week at the bedside of wife and mother. The funeral was conducted by Rev. F.S. Groner of the Baptist church of which Mrs. Yates had been many years a devout member. the pall bearers were: Jas. A. White, R.V. Colbert, D.O. McRimmon, J.C. Bryant, Geo. C. Clournoy, and F.H. Smith. Mrs. Maggie Carpenter, living with her son, C.T. Carpenter, in the southwest part of town, was stricken very suddenly with heart disease Monday morning and falling; was dead in a few moments. Mrs. Carpenter was 52 years of age and had been living in Stamford with her son for several years. The Park lake is trying to keep pace with the rivers which are on the boom. The lake rose 24 inches up to Monday morning, this is on 40 acres. Local and Personal Col. F.S. Hastings, manager of Swenson Bros. was called to Amarillo on business. Prof. O.F. Chastian, Superintendent of Stamford Public Schools will not be an applicant for re-election this year. C.L. Martin and Miss Joe Grimsley, on Monday went to Haskell in Mr. Bryant’s new auto, but the heavy rains of Tuesday forced the party to prolong their stay in Haskell. Two Stamford Ladies Struck by Lightning Mrs. Gardner, who is the wife of the brick mason, was struck. The home of J.M. Coursey, the Wells Fargo agent and some damage. Texas Chautauqua Circuit Opens Soon in Stamford Mr. W.F. LaFon will be business manager of the Stamford Chautauqua. Out of the Mud to Cement Walks 2000 feet Cement Sidewalks Put down in Stamford last 20 days Work is now in progress on another 1000 feet on Hamilton and South Ferguson Streets. The street is now complete on the east side from McHarg street to Rotan, two blocks and work beginning on the third block. Starting on the east side of Ferguson, Capt. Hastings has contracted for the piece alongside his residence to where Judge Fisher will likely take it up and complete the block, and Mr. Samples will start the line on down on the west side. East of the public square on both sides of Hamilton the work is being completed for the full length of the block, Messrs. Pattillo and Fisher and Lawson Hotel having led the way. Mr. Richardson having put down cement alongside his vacant lot is now willing to join owners of the vacant property in building north to a connection with the Swenson Bros’ walk at southeast corner of the crossing of McHarg and Weatherbee streets. Mr. Richardson’s residence while quite a distance out shows an example in regulation cement sidewalks and other residents in the outskirts of town would do well to follow. Now that the cement walk from the square to the Wichita Valley depot (soon to be the union depot) is assured from the square to the churches, 3-4 blocks up Swenson Avenue and Weatherbee should be needed. Our two cement contractors are to be joined by Mr. E.H. Allen, well known cement contractor of Fort Worth thinks better sand and gravel can be had from the Colorado River. At 12-1/2 cents per square foot - $25.00 for 50 foot front. - E.H. Allyn. Work Begun Union Depot Mr. A. O’Rourke of Fort Worth representing the contracting firm of Hughes & O’Rourke, for the Stamford Union Depot is in the city making contacts. Cement Sidewalks - D.G. Jordan Local and Personal Prof. C.E. Evans of Abilene and C.H. P'Pool of Anson came to town to be with their relative Mrs. Allen Maxwell in her last hours. Mrs. Allen Maxwell, one of Stamford’s most lovable women, after an illness of a few days died Sunday morning at her residence. Mrs. Maxwell has been in bad health for the past year, but not until last week was she in danger. Mrs. Maxwell was 51 years old and has resided in Stamford for one year. She leaves a sister, (Mrs. W.F. P’Pool) and two brothers. Her sister lives in Anson and her brother in Windsor, Mo. Mrs. Maxwell was a member of the First Baptist church here and has been a member all of her life. Rev. E.L. Groner, her late pastor, conducted funeral services here Sunday afternoon, after which the remains were taken to Anson. Rev. J.D. Reeves and J.H. Edmonds, two of her former pastors, held the burial services at the Anson cemetery. Claude Jones, the 16 month old son of Mr. J. Jones died Sunday May 10, at the home of M. Ernest Williams. Dodson of Colorado will deliver a lecture at the Collegiate Institute on “Memory” in the auditorium on Tuesday. Miss Duncan of Waco will give her voice recital here on the 29th.
