Barkley, 66, Anson pioneer, died at her home in Anson 9 October 1936 from a heart attack. Funeral service held at the Anson Baptist church with Rev. L.A. Doyle, pastor, assisted by Rev. Ben Hardy, Methodist minister officiating. Eddith Ward was born in Tennessee, near Fulton, Kentucky, 17 September 1870 and with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Ward, moved to Denton in 1881. Shortly after she came with her parents to Jones county, traveling by wagon and arrived at Fort Phantom Hill, 17 July 1881. ON that day, settlers were holding an election for organization of Jones county. Later the family moved to Jones City, now Anson, and Mrs. Barkley's father filed on a secton of land one mile south of where Funston is now located. Eddith Ward attended the first school taught in Jones County, at Antelope, where a dugout was used for a classroom. She was the first teacher at Fairview, now Tuxedo, which was started in 1887. On 21 November 1888, she was married to A.S. Barkley. Surviving: husband; 3 daughters - Mrs. Eugene Pittard of Anson, Mrs. G.M. Gillespie of Fort Worth, Mrs. Jack C. Perry of Terrell; 1 son - Mel S. Barkley of Anson; 3 sisters - Mrs. W.R. Logan and Mrs. Mattie Fisher of Anson, Mrs. Jess Burdine of Tyler; 6 grandchildren - Mrs. Jane Woodward Bell, Jack and Joe Woodward of Brownwood, Murray and Clark Gillespie of Fort Worth, Betty Joe Barkley of Anson; 1 great--granddaughter - Betty Jane Bell of Brownwood. Mr. and Mrs. Barkley's oldest child, Mrs. E.J. Woodward of Burkburnett died in 1917. Source: The Stamford American Stamford, Texas October 16, 1936
