Moore, One of Pioneers of Jones County, is Dead Funeral service for Joseph Oliver Moore, 83 years, was held Monday at St. John's Methodist church of which he was a member. The pastor, Rev. W. Carl Clement, conducted the service, assisted by Rev. T.M. Johnston, district superintendent. Burial in Highland cemetery. Grandsons: Billy Moore of Fort Stockton, Billy Shaw of Abilene, Ben Cole of Abilene, Harrison Durrett of Lubbock, Dr. Joe Rutherford and Joe Lattimore of Stamford were active pallbearers. Mr. Moore died Sunday in Stamford. Mr. Moore was one of the early residents of Jones county, coming by covered wagon from Hood county in 1886 and settling in the Fairview community near the present community of Tuxedo. Mr. Moore was one of the men who was instrumental in establishing the first school and the first church in that community. The family moved to Stamford in 1900, the year the town was founded. Mr. Moore was born in Mississippi, November 2, 1850. He came to Texas in 1876, settling in Hood county, and was married there to Miss Amanda Priscilla Davis in 1878. Mrs. Moore died in Stamford, December 1932. Survivors: four sons: Dr. W.H. Moore of Fort Stockton, E.D. Moore of Phoenix, AZ, Dalton Moore of Sweetwater, J. Preston "Mike" Moore of Stamford; 2 daughters: Mrs. J.H. Rutherford of Stamford, Mrs. Nib Shaw of Abilene; 12 grand; 3 great also survive. Harrison Durrett of Lubbock and Mrs. Ben Cole of Abilene, are son and daughter of Mr. Moore's daughter who died a number of years ago and they made their home here with the family for a number of years. Among the out-of-town relatives who were here for the funeral: 3 half-brothers - Albert Moore of Hamlin, John Moore of Floydada, Tom Moore of Grassland; Mrs. W.R. Chapman of Abilene and Mrs. George Baker of Abilene, sisters of the late Mrs. Moore." The Stamford American 26 January 1940
