Tombstone has his year of birth as 1823.
He as actually born in 1833.
 Born: 25 Dec 1833  Died: 7 Jan 1907

Just before 1860 James Reuben Cory arrived in Texas, traveling alone from North 
Carolina. A small trunk with his personal belongings is all that he brought. 
The trunk was handed down through the generations to his granddaughter, Opal 
Cory Hatcher. A small derringer pistol was given by Opal to her cousin, Michael 
Alan Reese, Great-Great-Grandson of James Reuben Cory. It is still in his 
possession (Sept 2007).
