Head coach Jonathan Anderson said that getting out to an early lead has been a focus point for his team. "This is what we've been talking about," Anderson said. "That just gives us all the confidence in the world and that basket gets a lot bigger. Now we just have to work on going for the jugular early when we start a game like that." The Flyers (6-4) opened with a 12-2 run thanks to the long-range shooting of D.J. Hybner and Kevin Westerman along with the inside play of Derek Loebbecke. The Badgers (4-8) had a hard time getting the ball down the court against the Flyers, managing only 10 shots in the opening quarter. Half of those shots were taken from 3-point range and missed their mark. The Flyers were able to yank down the rebounds and finished the quarter with a 19-10 lead. Loebbecke took over in the second quarter, scoring eight points while dominating the low post. Karnes City answered with low post Clayton Reynolds, scoring six points in the quarter and better shot selection from the other players. The Badgers weren't able to close any ground, but they also didn't let the Flyers extend the lead as they kept the game within 10 points going into the half. The Badgers managed to hang with the Flyers through the third quarter as well. "Our kids really played hard," Karnes City coach Sean Armstrong said. "They played really well and I think the game was closer than the score shows." Westerman scored eight of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Karnes City's Reynolds also finished with 20 points to lead the Badgers. Derek Loebbecke's 16 inside points and D.J. Hybner's 14 points from the outside were also big for the Flyers. ************************************************ December 16, 2006 Industrial cleared; Karnes City waiting Both school districts respond to state TAKS investigation ADVOCATE STAFF REPORT Industrial was one of the districts cleared in the state investigation, but Karnes City school district remains under investigation. Industrial Superintendent Tony Williams said the district was originally flagged for successfully raising test scores. "In our case, it was for unusual gains in 10th grade reading," he said. "The consultants looked at test scores over a three-year period and we had jumps above the state average of 4 to 5 percent." Williams said he was first contacted about the supposed test problems in May and the district fully cooperated with state. He said much of the information used to clear the district was compiled at the local level and then forwarded to the state. "We had to prepare what they call a desk audit about our testing procedures," he said. "That included information on our security measures and any unusual incidents during tests. Actually, I'm glad the TEA is putting new security measures in place. It helps to remind everyone of the need to follow the testing guidelines. We've done a lot to sharpen up our training of teachers both in the administration of and in keeping secure the tests." In explaining the gains that got the district placed on the list, Williams said it was a case of the district setting a goal and achieving it. "As we said in our audit report, we had several good teachers who trained together and outlined some new instructional strategies. We expected improvement and when it happened we got identified for it." The Karnes City's interim Superintendent Eli Casey said he believes it is only a matter of time before the district is cleared. "We're probably more curious about what the final decision will be than anyone," he said. "We haven't heard anything and right now we're assuming we're going to be taken off the list. I was just talking about it to our Special Programs Administrator Wally Reyna on Thursday. We got our paperwork into the state just before the deadline so maybe they just haven't gotten to it yet. But I know it's not good to have a doubt like this hanging over your head." Casey, who has been on the job since August, said the district was informed of the problem before he took over but is confident the district had followed the test-taking guidelines. "I'm convinced there was no cheating based on the survey we prepared," he said. "We were pulled out for high school chemistry for having similar responses on tests. Well, we want our responses to be similar - all of the answers right. Something like this doesn't take into account that if you have good, dynamic teachers like ours the kids are going to have similar answers. Even if the answer might be wrong, that can reflect a flaw in the curriculum but it also means the students learned the same material." Casey added the district has no plans to change the way testing is handled. "We feel that we did things right the first time," he said. "We monitored the students and followed the rules. I came here in August, but by reviewing things, every necessary precaution was put in place. We're going to continue to do things the same way until they tell us we're doing it wrong and the TEA hasn't done that." ************************************************ December 16, 2006 Average household incomes in the Victoria area How many students will be eligible to take advantage of The University of Texas at San Antonio's offer to pay full tuition and fees for incoming freshmen whose families make less than $25,000 a year? In 2001, however, the Texas legislature declared Kenedy to be the Texas Horned Lizard Capital of the World. The horned lizard has been protected since 1967, and Kenedy noticed that it had a lot of them. Most Texans might call them “horny toads” (the mascot of Texas Christian University), but they really are lizards. Handbook of Texas Online KENEDY, TEXAS. Kenedy is on U.S. Highway 181 and State Highway 72 four miles south of Karnes City in southwestern Karnes County. Its site was part of a royal Spanish land grant made to Carlos Martínez in 1788. The community was established in 1886 on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, on a tract of land bought by Mifflin Kenedy from George W. Little that year. It was named Kenedy Junction in honor of Kenedy, the chief benefactor of the SA&AP. The post office at Kenedy Junction was established on March 27, 1887; its name was shortened to Kenedy on June 21, 1887. (...) Although passenger train service was discontinued in the 1950s, Kenedy remained an economic center for the surrounding area, which derives its livelihood principally from farming, ranching, oil, gas, and uranium. Kenedy calls itself the “flax capital of Texas” and had at one time an annual Flax Festival. Texas West 01/14/01 Horned toads scamper into Legislature By ANNA M. TINSLEY Scripps Howard Austin Bureau (...) Kenedy County Some residents were remodeling a home in Kenedy County last year when they realized there were a number of horned lizards on their property. The Horned Lizard Conservation Society looked into it and discovered that Kenedy County has the largest known population of federally protected Texas horned lizards. And the lizard population is growing, said Roxanne Hoff, executive secretary of the Kenedy Chamber of Commerce. That’s why residents formed the Horned Toad Club of Kenedy, which is open to anyone with an interest in the horned toad. Hoff was one of several community members who sought special recognition for Kenedy – such as a state resolution declaring the city the Texas Horned Lizard Capital of the World. “We thought it would help our Kenedy fame in a very positive way and put a spark in tourism,” she said. “We already know it is bringing some people to town who might be on their way somewhere else.” Already, some motorists stop and visit after seeing signs declaring the community the Horned Lizard Capital. “People stop by the chamber or downtown and ask where they can see some horned toads,” Hoff said. “Right now, in winter, they are in hibernation so it’s hard to find them now. “But we really do have a gem here.” Texas Horned Lizard The Texas Horned Lizard Horny Toads are neither frogs nor toads. As members of the reptile family, they are technically Horned Lizards. But if you grew up in Texas, it’s a horny toad. Why is the Texas Horned Lizard on the endangered species list? Most older Texans have had, at one time or another, a horny toad for a pet. Its appeal is the combination of a fierce appearance and a surprisingly pleasant personality. You can hold one in your hand, turn it over on its back, and stroke its belly until it dozes off. Unfortunately, the horny toad’s appeal is in part responsible for the rapid decline. In the fifties and early sixties, every tourist trap on every Texas highway sold horny toads as souvenirs. Some collectors gathered hundreds of thousands in a single year by paying schoolchildren a nickel for each one they brought in. Out of their natural home, the animals died, and so the state began protecting the Texas Horned Lizard in 1967. Today it is illegal even to own one as the Texas Horned Lizard is now a state-listed threatened species (federal category C2). A second factor in the demise of the horny toad was pesticides. Chemical sprays that didn’t kill the creature itself killed harvester ants, its main food supply. Urbanization also hurt horny toads as widespread construction tore up their habitat. They actually liked highway asphalt, which retained enough heat to make an ideal lounging spot. But because horny toads instinctively freeze when they see movement, cars flattened them left and right. Nevertheless, there are still horny toads in Texas. Official Capital Designations - Texas State Library Horned Lizard Capital of Texas Kenedy House Resolution No. 39, Senate Resolution No. 76, 77th Legislature, Regular Session (2001) (...) Texas Horned Lizard Capital of the World Kenedy House Concurrent Resolution No. 41, 77th Legislature, Regular Session (2001) Texas Legislature H.C.R. No. 41 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The city of Kenedy in Karnes County is a charming community that is known throughout South Texas for its colorful history and close association with the Texas horned lizard; and WHEREAS, The town enjoys the unique distinction of having the largest known population of federally protected Texas horned lizards, and Kenedy residents have embraced the responsibilities of coexistence with this remarkable species; and WHEREAS, To that end, they are keenly aware of landscaping, pest control, and other decisions affecting the creature’s habitat and are working in conjunction with the Horned Lizard Conservation Society to conduct research on the lizard with the goal of incorporating the results of that research into an academic curriculum; and WHEREAS, In addition, residents have formed the Horned Toad Club of Kenedy, which is open to anyone having an interest in the species; the goals of this estimable organization include promoting conservation and preservation of Texas horned lizards, establishing a habitat site and a library, erecting a museum, and conducting survey and research work; and WHEREAS, Texas horned lizards are a part of the rich heritage and culture of Kenedy and, indeed, all of the Lone Star State, and it is fitting to accord the city official recognition of its special status; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby declare Kenedy the Texas Horned Lizard Capital of the World and commend the citizens of Kenedy for their continued efforts to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of this uniquely Texan protected species. Leading the pack were seniors Paden King and Jared Jaroszewski, who were named the co-MVPs of the district. King was the Panthers’ workhorse at H-back and helped keep the team together after Jaroszewski, the Panthers’ do-it-all quarterback, tore his the ACL in his right knee against Karnes City, ending his season. King rushed for 1,026 yards and 11 touchdowns on 154 carries and was also a valuable receiver out of the backfield. Jaroszewski was well on his way to bettering 1,000 yards on the ground and through the air when he was injured. Through four and a half games, he racked up 541 yards and eight touchdowns rushing while throwing for 564 yards and six scores. Junior Cole Allison took over for Jaroszewski and helped lead Navarro to the share of the district championship. Allison got it mostly with his legs and by not turning the ball over. For his efforts, he received first-team honors. Joining him on the first team were offensive linemen Santos Verdin, a three-time All-District pick at center, and Kyle Mercer. Lee Schoech, a solid receiver and blocker at tight end, and Josiah Moneyhon, the Panthers' top wide receiver, also earned first-team accolades. Kicker Travis Korn, who was perfect on extra points and knocked home the game-winning kick in the Panthers' 24-22 win over Karnes City, was not only named first-team All-District, but honorable mention All- State, as well. On the defensive side, defensive end Clayton Warren was a first-team pick, as were linebackers Verdin and Nic Ochoa and defensive back Caleb Kokenes. Warren's emergence as the team's top defensive end allowed the Panthers to have King play mostly on offense and keep him from getting worn down. Verdin, the only Panther to earn first-team honors on both sides of the ball, was the heart and soul of Navarro's defense, while Ochoa and Kokenes, both juniors, turned in strong seasons and will be called upon to help lead the defense next year. Second-team performers on offense were offensive lineman Kyle Tubre and running back Randy Castillo, while defensive tackle Trevor Mendenhall, defensive end Lee Schoech, linebacker Lucas Arriaga and Allison, a defensive back, were named to the second-team defense. Offensive lineman Justin Meyer, defensive lineman Jeff Joslyn, linebacker Todd Albert and wide receiver Kaeleb Schriewer received honorable mention. The Panthers appear to be in good shape for next season, especially on the defensive side of the ball, where they are slated to return seven players who received at least honorable mention on the All- District teams. ************************************************ From mysa.com December 31, 2006 Cross country: Class Teams BOYS CLASS 5A Albert Cardenas, Judson, junior: Super Team selection.
