January 19, 2006 Karnes among counties receiving grant to fight juvenile delinquency SONNY LONG - Victoria Advocate KARNES CITY - The Karnes County Juvenile Probation Department has been awarded a $200,665 grant to help fight juvenile delinquency in Karnes, Wilson and Atascosa counties. "This is the third year we have received the grant," said Neva Schmidt, chief probation officer. "The fact that we serve three counties makes our situation unique." The grant is awarded under the federal Title IV Delinquency Prevention Act Fund and distributed by the Governor's Criminal Justice Division. Schmidt said the funds are used mainly for recreational programs, including the boxing club in Atascosa County, but is available to all three counties. "It funds the programs and the facility for the boxing club as well as afternoon tutorials, and rewards such as fishing trips and Spurs tickets," Schmidt said. "It also funds a challenge course that teaches communications skills, better choice making, building self- esteem and how to be a team player." According to a press release announcing the awarding of the grant, Gov. Rick Perry said, "By improving educational opportunities and enhancing community support systems, we are reaching out to those children that need a guiding hand. Our goal is to keep children out of the juvenile justice system by providing the support they need to make right choices." Schmidt also said the grant helps fund the department's day program, or boot camp, in Karnes County. Sonny Long is a reporter for the Advocate. After the collision that happened about 2 p.m., the mess took hours to clean up and State Highway 80 was closed as late as 7 p.m. Robert Leal was treated at the scene for an arm injury and lacerations to his face. Elmer Holm was taken to Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he was soon after transported by helicopter to San Antonio. Leal’s 18-wheeler tanker truck crashed into Holm’s pickup truck while Holm was trying to turn across State Highway 80. "He (Leal) said he saw Mr. Holm pull over to the right shoulder of the roadway. He thought he had cattle there because there were cattle on the right-hand side. (Holm) started to make a left turn. At that point in time, Mr. Leal said he honked his horn, didn’t get any response, and by then it was too late," Texas DPS Trooper Alfred Alejos said. Leal swerved trying to miss Holm, but ended up striking the front end of Holm’s vehicle. "When it hit (Holm), it kind of spun him around and then the right rear tire on the tractor trailer itself hit his back end, which shot Mr. Holm up against a fence," Alejos said. As a result of the impact, Leal’s 18-wheeler overturned and skidded, opening up a hole in its cargo tank, spilling diesel fuel out onto the highway. "He was carrying diesel. Had that been gasoline … it would’ve been a bad deal," Alejos said. Rescue crews soon arrived to extricate Holm. Leal had been able to walk away from his wrecked 18-wheeler. So far no citations have been issued in the case. Alejos noted Holm’s seatbelt saved his life. jjansky@thecountywide.com **************************** January 23, 2006 Karnes senior sweeps grand champion honors Billy Bob Moczygemba's schoolboy career showing animals at the Karnes County Youth Show ended Saturday with what has come to be expected - more grand champion banners. Moczygemba's goat and lamb entries earned grand champion honors as the Karnes City High School senior completed an impressive nine-year run. Since first entering the annual show as a fourth-grader in 1998, Moczygemba has shown six grand champion market goats, one grand champion breeding goat, five grand champion lambs, two reserve champion market goats, and one reserve champion breeding goat. He also picked up eight showmanship awards along the way. This was the fourth year in the last five that Moczygemba has swept grand champion honors with both his goat and lamb entries. In 2004, his lamb was named grand champion and his goat took reserve honors. That same year, he also showed a grand champion breeding goat. "It's kind of bittersweet, being a senior and knowing this is the last time," Moczygemba said. "You really can't compare one year with another. It's nice to go out with a bang." In addition to the two grand champions, Moczygemba, representing Lonesome Dove 4-H, also swept senior showmanship honors for the second consecutive year. "I guess my success has something to do with my constant competitive drive," he said. "I want to be the best. I've been doing this since I was five. I love it. My family loves it." The end of the line also was bittersweet for Moczygemba because of the absence of his mother, Brenda, who died in a car accident the morning of Oct. 19, 2004. It was a one-vehicle crash that Billy Bob and younger brother Cody survived. "She is still a big influence in my life," Moczygemba said. "She emphasized education so much, and I still carry that with me." Brenda Moczygemba was a junior high school guidance counselor. Moczygemba said he plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in animal science with an eye toward veterinary medicine. Moczygemba's grand champion goat brought in $2,500 during the premium sale and his lamb sold for $2,000. The goat sold to Pico Petroleum, Tiger Tote, and Urban Surveying.
