Mary was born in Runge, Texas on December 17, 1917, to William Terry and Grace Pierce Scarborough. The family later moved to Kenedy, where she lived until graduating high school. Mary attended the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in art and French. After marriage, she lived in a number of towns and cities in Texas as well as in California and Nebraska, before returning to Kenedy, where she worked for General Mills until retiring. Mary loved to dance. She once said, "Dance was automatic." She began dancing lessons at age six and was a ballerina performing throughout Texas until age sixteen. During high school she began dancing to local bands as well as the occasional Big Band traveling between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. In her 80s, Mary was seen kicking up her heels, Western line dancing. She played golf much of her adult life. Although she was no longer actively playing when Tiger Woods came along, she avidly followed the PGA Tour, rooting for Tiger at every opportunity. Mary was also an avid reader, and Las Vegas was her favorite travel destination. Most recently, she lived at Hamilton House Retirement Community in San Antonio. Following cremation, her ashes will be scattered at a family ceremony in Austin. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Grace Scarborough Roberts, and her brother W. T. "Bill" Scarborough, Jr. She is survived by her children, Dan McLendon of Austin, Mary McLendon of Austin, Terry McLendon of Colorado, and Ruth Coombs of San Antonio, eleven grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren. Assured by her angels that there is a better place, she died peacefully in her sleep. Mary was a gracious woman in every sense of the word, and her wonderful smile, sense of humor, and positive outlook on life will be missed. We know she'll find new bridge and Mah Jong partners aplenty in her new home. "We would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord." 2 Cor 5:8. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may do so to the Salvation Army or the charity of their choice. ************************************************ Joseph Phillip Fischer, Jr. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Joseph Phillip Fischer Jr., 72, a Birmingham resident for 21 years, died Sunday morning in a Birmingham hospital.
