The 3rd Infantry Regiment completed its organization and began their duty in San Antonio during the fall of 1861 through 1862. In January 1863 the regiment proceeded to Brownsville where they protected cotton shipments and guarded against raids from Mexico. The regiment was disbanded before the Trans-Mississippi Department surrendered in June, 1865 and the troops returned to their homes. Original Trnascription: Un RECUERDO A LA MEMORIA Del Senor Don Genaro De La Cruz Nacio en 1837 y MURIO A LA EDAD DE 73 ANOS EL 26 DE MAYO DE 1910 PAZ A SUS RESOS Genaro's grandfather was Damacio De la Cruz, an original founding family of Mission San Jose in San Antonio which was formally founded 23 February 1720 by Franciscan Frey Margil de Jesus and three bands of Coahulitecan Indians; the Pampopa, Suliajame and Pastia Indians tribes. Genaro’s wife Maria de Jesus Suniga and daughter (Maria de) Pilar de la Cruz are also buried here at Gillett Latin Cemetery. Additional Comments: The grave is located behind the Gillett Cemetery in Karnes County which is already listed by Lisa Dromgoole Adams. It contains several graves and includes the ancestral Serenil Family. The sad part is that the back part of the cemetery property was fenced off and only about 30 or so graves remain there. The entrance to the Gillett Latin Cemetery is on the small road next the well-known Gillett Cemetery. This back area contains I believe the graves of the Hispanic population of Gillett.
