Emerson of the Whitton community passed from this world at her home in the community, May 26, at 7 p.m. Grand Ma Emerson was born in Margate county of Kent in England Dec. 8, 1847, being at the time of her death 89 years, 5 months and 18 days of age. She was married to Thomas Edward Emerson in Ramsgate, England, Sept. 22, 1868. They sailed from their native country to this land of good will and fortune, Dec. 18 1874, settling in Van Zandt county in 1882 where they lived and reared their family. Grand Ma Emerson had been a faithful member of the Church of Christ for more than a half century. She was loved and respected by both young and old and was cheerful to the end despite the years of old age and infirmities. Grand Ma Emerson lived a long useful active life and could relate a very colorful and interesting history of north America as well as of the British Isles. Our loss of this faithful Christian will be heavens gain. She was preceded in death by her husband, T. E. Emerson in 1922 and by one son, E.J. Emerson of this community in 1936, and survived by one sister of Nottingham, England, one son and two daughters, T.G. Emerson of Stone Point, Mrs. Ellen Reed of Wise, and Mrs. Maud Jordan of Whitton, 18 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Funeral services conducted by Eubank Bros. Of Canton. Pallbearers were eight grand sons as follows: G.H. Emerson, L.G. Emerson, W.B. Emerson, E.E. Emerson, L.T. Emerson, Sam Reed, E.M. Reed and E.J. Reed. Flower girls were seven granddaughters: Mrs. Mary Ann Luellen, and Mrs. Gracie Campbell, Mrs. Eva Drewery, Mrs. Rosie Dorsey, Mrs. Mary Ann Luellen and Mrs. Estell Collier. Interment in Tarver cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. R.W. Sims of Jackson, surrounded by a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends. *********************************************** Copyright.
