GILLILAND CEMETERY HISTORY The following article appeared in the "BETWEEN THE WICHITA'S" published in 1985 and written by Gladys Meek: (The following information is written with the permission of Gladys Meek) Records of the early history of the Gilliland Cemetery is incomplete. According to the memory of several older citizens, O.W. Welch and others, in 1912 Bud Jones owned the land where the cemetery is located. A community tradition says that a lodge, the Woodmen of the World donated the land for a cemetery at some time. The date is not known. The WOW is supposed to have purchased the land from Bud Jones for W.A.(Grandpa) Cure.. The lodge then designated the land as a community cemetery where anyone in the Gilliland area could be buried for the cost of a small recording fee per lot. This must have happened before 1914 as Dolph Martin became a WOW member that year and he did not help with the purchase since it had been completed. The first person buried in the Gilliland Cemetery was a child. The Elvin Lively family was traveling in a wagon from Paducah, Texas to Gilliland to visit his maternal uncles, Owen and Alfred Shaw. They were just west of Truscott when the baby crawled up to a watermelon; perhaps it rolled. Anyway, she fell out and the wagon ran over her. Clarice Lively born October 14, 1914, died August 29, 1915. The family chose to bury her here. The cemetery had already been donated. Her little grave was the very first one. For many years the cemetery was kept by calling for an occasional community working. Those living here kept their own family's graves or those of special friends. The grass and weeds grew high and thick. After the cemetery began and as long as he was in the grocery business, Fred McGuire kept the cemetery map. Those needing lost would go to the store to look for vacant lot numbers. The only known burial of a black person in the Gilliland Cemetery took place in 1918. Sam Berry, a worker on the B.S. Martin farm died suddenly, possibly of a heart condition, and was buried at Gilliland. The cemetery continued to be cared for by individuals working family graves and the community cemetery work days through the twenty and thirties. A black man was shot by two other black people on the Oscar Miller farm about 1932 or 33. His name has been forgotten and so has his burial place. He may have been buried at Gilliland. After Fred McGuire moved to Vera about 1939 the cemetery map was kept in the Willie New Service Station. September 1, 1946, Eston bought the station from his father. After World War II, the government established various veterans' training schools to help veterans make the transition from war to peace-time living. One such school was established at Gilliland. The veterans vocational agricultural class took the community cemetery as a project in 1946. First they bought a flag and put up a flagpole. They spent long, hard hours moving and raking the cemetery and cleaning each grave. After obtaining the worn, old cemetery map, the veterans had a new copy made. Using it they located each lot with stakes. Small holes were dug, filled with concrete just below ground level and each lot number was marked in the wet cement. The project was important to those young men, many of whom had wondered if they would ever see Gilliland again. Working together on the cemetery gave them an opportunity to exchange war stories only other veterans could understand, as well as a way to show thanks for having returned to their homes between the Wichita's. The desire to do something lasting led the former servicemen to help promote a community meeting to discuss forming a cemetery association for the continuation of the work they had begun. Records of the first meeting, in the school auditorium thought to have been held early in 1947, show that it was definitely a success. O.W. Welch was elected president; J. Omar Cure, vice president; and Gladys Meek, secretary and treasurer. Four committeemen; W. T. Cook, Burr Massingill, Charles Meek, and Arnold Navratil were appointed. The first donations were taken that night. After organizing, the first move was to contact WOW officers known to have been in the lodge when the land was bought. Permission was needed to transfer the responsibility of upkeep, make the organization into an association, and to see if they knew others who should be contacted for permission. The ones contacted were: John Cure, Goree: Fred B. McGuire, Vera; and Alfred Shaw, Freer. The response from each was, "Yes, the community could take the responsibility of the upkeep of the cemetery." Each expressed how happy he was that Gilliland wanted to do this, and all agreed to change the name from WOW Cemetery to Gilliland Cemetery Association. It was decided that the best and easiest way to raise money was to have benefit programs and musicals. At the schoolhouse admission fees were charged and all proceeds went to the cemetery association. But the piano was "shot" and needed replacing. With cake walks, ice cream suppers, and door-to-door donation drives, the school piano was soon replaced so musicals could be held for the cemetery association. All the community banded together and the goals were achieved. At first, cemetery workers could be hired when needed, but as time went by, it got harder to get hired help. The custom of community volunteer work day began and ample help always showed up. In the southwest part of the cemetery, a special area was chosen by the Mexican-Americans to bury their loved ones. They always participated in the community cemetery work days. Some families have moved away but return yearly on special occasions. There are always new flowers being added to their lots. At the third meeting, the idea as presented to hire a man and his wife as president and treasurer. This way they could discuss the needs easily, then contact the committeemen. It just seemed to fall into place for the president to mow the large areas by tractor-drawn small mowers. Then the graves around the markers and small areas are mowed with riding or hand mowers. Through the years, everyone has cooperated. Many couples have taken the responsibility two, three or more times. Only two new committee men have been elected for several years. Gladys Meek said, "I do not believe there is a person in our community that would turn down this responsibility. It is time consuming and means many hours of hard work for each officer, but we all take pride in the cemetery and in our association. Many people care for their own graves and also donate money. Annual meetings are held to elect officers, accept donations and discuss needs." Those first few years the Cemetery Association raised funds to dig a well, build a pump house, and pipe water along the center of the cemetery from south to north. The veterans did the labor for the water project, bought hoses, donated labor for a tool house, and helped put up a memorial marker honoring World War I and World War II casualties. Since then, the cemetery has been fenced with iron pipe, and Dick Bays and sons built the entrance with the words "Gilliland Cemetery". In 1968 the Association tied on to the rural water line. Other than upkeep, the most important current project is a perpetual care fund for the cemetery. A savings account was started several years ago which is growing slowly but is steadily being increased by memorials and bequests.
