LEE CEMETERY Roxton, Lamar County, Texas This has been an on-going project for about fifteen years. For this reason, and the fact that we had little information at the beginning, I have gone into some detail regarding the research and restoration, so that others may have some idea about the various sources, and be assured that we have done rather thorough research in order to collect as much proof as possible. We hope that any who are interested in Lee Cemetery will contact us and share their family histories. Additions & corrections to this page certainly will be appreciated. For information, you may contact Jean & George Caddel (geocad@aol.com) or Alice Murphy (acmurphy1@juno.com) Plats available from geocad@aol.com _______________________________ Lee Cemetery is located southwest of Roxton (once called Prairie Mount), Lamar County, Texas. This cemetery had been abandoned for many years and most of the stones were broken, scattered, and buried under large fallen trees, and head high underbrush, many up to a foot underground, with only 17 graves known to be there when we first started searching. At least half of the first 17 we knew to be members of George Caddel's great-grandparents' families, which was all the catalyst we needed to keep searching for ways to accomplish the monumental task of restoring this historical site. The earliest date inscribed is 1831. A number of years were spent in clearing, probing, searching for lost stones, fitting scattered pieces of stones together as close to the original spot as could be determined, and copying all inscriptions that were legible. Part of this was accomplished through the hour upon hour of research in the court house, archives, and library, knocking doors of the community looking for information, and researching the history of southwest Lamar County in order to put together some of the facts. We needed to know just who all of these people were in order to find other descendants who were interested in the cemetery before we could even begin restoration. A few years later, some others began their own search, but none of us were aware of the other for several years. The cemetery was growing larger and larger each day, and seemed it might be a hopeless cause. The various groups that were going out to this cemetery were pondering, "What could be done?" Finally we made contact in 1990, scheduled our first meeting, and formed a Cemetery Association within the next year. We also began clearing and clean-up so that we could determine the size of the plot, eventually built a fence with an entry and sign, a storage house with mowers and tools, have all known stones restored, with nearly one hundred of those identified, have a general fund for immediate expenses, and a fund started to insure permanent care in the future. To date, there are 133 marked graves, and another one or two are found each time we have a work day, which is twice a year - the last Saturday in April, and the last Saturday in September. We are now in the process of registering the cemetery as a Texas State Historical Site, and hope to have a Historical Marker by September of next year, 1999. The cemetery is located on the John H. Fowler Survey, which is about 4 miles southwest of Roxton. Betsy Woodson & Eleaser Barnett of Kentucky had one son Eli Barnett, before Eleaser died in Kentucky ca 1816. She was left with several of his children plus her own son, and married Thomas J. Denton when Eli was about nine years old. Soon afterward, ca 1819, they headed for Pecan Point on the Red River, located in what was then old Miller Co., Arkansas, arriving in 1823. Thomas J. died in early 1825, and Betsy married another early settler, John H. Fowler about 1825, but she only lived about two years after that. In 1827, the settlers were driven from the area north of the Red River, and the southern half of the county remained as a part of the Territory of Arkansas, but most of the settlers aligned themselves with Mexico as residents of the Province of Texas, State of Coahuilla. They signed the Wavel Colony register, and tried to insure ownership of their property on the south side of the Red River. Some even paid taxes to both Arkansas and the Mexican government, and later to the Republic of Texas. Eli Barnett, now about 20 years of age, chose to remain with some of the old settlers opposite the Kiamichi river, while Fowler took one of the Arkansas land grants. John Woodson Denton, son of Thomas J. & Betsy Woodson Barnett Denton, is believed to have gone with his step father, John Fowler, but returned soon at the age of about ten to look after a herd of cattle for Eli Barnett, his half brother. There is some evidence that some ventured farther west, even as far as what is now the Bonham, Fannin County area, on hunting trips and other occasions. The eastern part of what is now Lamar County began to be more thickly settled about 1833, but the west was still very dangerous. However, white settlers soon began to move into the Prairie Mount (Roxton) area, and John Fowler moved back to Texas in 1834. He, Eli Barnett, Jacob & Isaac Lyday, Jesse & Eli Shelton, and others put claims on land sometime between 1844 and 1837. Shelton established a fort southeast of Roxton in 1837, Eli Barnett chose a tributary of the North Sulphur near Cane Creek, and John W. Denton built a cabin in the northwest section of this survey about where the Roxton School is today. It is thought that he drove cattle to Barnett's place as early as 1833. Fort Lyday, which was almost to the Fannin County line, eight miles southwest of Roxton, was built in 1836 to help protect the settlers from Indians. One Daniel Davis was scalped by the Indians when he left the fort to go to his land in the southeaster part of Fannin Co., near the town of Ladonia. His son, Andrew, was left to be raised by his stepmother, of whom he was very fond, but he soon began going out on his own. He became a Methodist minister and he and his wife both died in Ellis County, Texas. By 1842, the Indians were no longer a threat to the farmers of western Lamar County, and many settlers began to come into the area, including Simon Derrick, who first came to the Red River area in 1839, claimed land first in 1841, Titus County, then in Hopkins County, and Lamar County. The last Simon Derrick survey he acquired is on the North Branch of the Sulphur River, just below the John H. Fowler survey and he evidently died. In 1843-4, he built nine miles of the National Road, for which he received 999 acres of land in north Hopkins County. This road was cut through Lamar Co. in the area from just south of Ft. Lyday to the Paris area, and continued to a point on the river in Red River County. Some Historians say it was never built, and perhaps it was not finished, but, at least nine miles was completed by 1844. Later most of his children came from Alabama to join him in the Lamar-Delta-Hopkins County area. Other settlers who had family buried in this cemetery were Andrew J. Davis (one of three Davis families who came to the area), the Denton family & their relations, James C. McAmis, who came from Tennessee in 1845, the Ragsdale, Bryant & Laird families. By the 1850's and 60's, many more began to find their way to southwest Lamar County, including the McDaniels, Canadas, Carliles, and Herbert Lee, who reserved in his will one acre for the cemetery, which was already in use. Through the years, the Lee Cemetery outgrew its bounds and now consists of about four acres. Only a few were buried here after 1910, and the latest know date is 1914. The cemetery is in the center of a remote field. At the request of the owner and the Cemetery Association, the gate is kept locked; however, descendants and other interested parties may gain entrance by contacting one of the above numbers for information. Also, information on the cemetery is available at the Genealogy Library in Paris, Texas. To reach the cemetery, take Hwy 38 southwest from Roxton toward Ben Franklin past Restland Cemetery on the right. Immediately after crossing the first bridge after Restland, turn right on Rd. 26310 & follow to the red brick house on the right. Make jog around house and continue to the next road at an abandoned white house. Turn right and follow road to a dead end into Rd. 26300, again turn right and follow 26300 to a left turn, which takes you to the gate by a barn. This is where you enter the pasture. After entering the gate, follow the private trail across the dam of a small lake on the left, and the cemetery is located about .4 mile from the gate in a grove of trees that can be seen on the crest of the hill. _____________________ A large part of the information on the early history of the Barnett, Denton, & Fowler family was taken from: "The Journey Across America 1630-1931," written by Skipper Steely for Cecile Denton Roden from her Notes and Research, Published 1985. Other sources were the County Records of Old Miller Co., Ark., Red River, Lamar, Delta, Hopkins, & Fannin Counties, U. S. Census Records. Republic of Texas Records, Texas Land Records, Civil War Records, Old Newspapers, and many family histories of the various families. _________________________________________________________________ Comments in parenthesis after each name. FLAT SLAB OVER UNDERGROUND VAULT - Center of South Side (According to an "old timer" of the area, there were descending steps with two markers in the vault; however, through the years, it has filled with dirt, and all stones and steps are completely deteriorated with the exception of the cedar poles supporting the top slab. Some have thought the crypt might be for Herbert Lee, who died ca 1865, and his 2nd wife; however, we have found no documents or proof. One other possibility we have thought of is Simon Derrick, since it is between plots of two of his sons, and he died here about 1867 - again no proof.)
