L. (Katherine) Gardner, a civic and community leader of Alice, died Monday at 3 p.m. in a local hospital. Mrs. Gardner had resided in Alice since June 1925, and prior to moving to Alice, she lived in Bishop. She was born in Paris, Texas on December 11, 1886. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dale Harter officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Alice Cemetery under the direction of Holmgreen Mortuary of Alice. Pallbearers will be Sammy Gobble, Leo Cohrs, Gary Monferdini, E. A. Austin, Dr. W. O. Davis and John Harris. She was preceded in death by her husband J. L. Gardner, who served as Mayor of Alice and Secretary of the Alice Chamber of Commerce. At the time of his death, Mrs. Gardner assumed the duties of the Secretary of the Alice Chamber of Commerce. Later she also served as the Chamber of Commerce Secretary of Falfurrias. Among many of her civic activities for the community, Mrs. Gardner served as Chairman of the Red Cross, President of the PTA, headed the committee to restore the old Alice Cemetery, planted the trees around the present high school and held numerous offices in the First Christian Church. The First Christian Church was organized in the Gardner’s home. At the time of her death, Mrs. Gardner was on the building committee for the new First Christian Church and was to turn the first spade of dirt for the foundation of the new church next Sunday. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Louise Burke of Houston; three sons, Robert Gardner of Rosenburg; James Gardner of Beeville; Dr. Frank Gardner of New York; nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations by made to the Building Fund of the First Christian Church.
