THE STATE OF TEXAS, County of Lampasas To the honorable County Judge of Lampasas County, Texas. Your petitioner, Z.W. Ketchum, respectfully represents that he is a resident citizen of Lampasas County, in the State of Texas, and that hemakes this application for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the act passed by the 26th Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved May 12, A.D. 1899, the same being an act entitled "An act to carry into effect the amendment to the Constitution of the State of Texas, providing that aid may be granted to disabled and dependent Confederate soldiers, sailors, and their widows under certain conditions, and to make an appropriation therefore, and I do solemnly swear that the answers I have given to the following questions are true. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Note- Applicant must make answer to all of the following questions, and such answers must be written out plainly in ink. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What is your name? Answer Z.W. Ketchum Q. What is your age? Answer 64 years old next Sept. 10, 1899 Q. In what County do you reside? Answer Lampasas Q. How long have you resided in said County and what is your post office address? Answer Since January 1896 Q. Have you applied for a pension under the Confederate Pension Law heretofore, and been rejected? If so state when and where. Answer. I never have. Q. What is your occupation if able to engage in one? Answer I try to farm some Q. What is your physical condition? Answer I am in very feeble condition Q. If your physical condition is such that you are unable by your own labor to earn a support, state what caused such disability. Answer. Caused by wounds in the war and exposure in army Q. State in what company and regiment you enlisted in the Confederate army, and the time of your service? Answer Co. K (Capt. Jas. Thomas) 19th Tex Cavalry, and served from March 4, 1862 until close of the war. Q. If you served in the Confederate navy state when and where, and the time of your service. Answer. Q. State whether or not you have received any pension or veteran donation land certificate under any previous law, and if you answer in the affirmative state what pension or veteran donation land certificate you have received. Answer Have received nothing of the kind. Q. What real and personal property do you now own, and what is the present value of such property? Give list of such property and value. Answer No real estate at all. The only personal property I own is two ponies worth about $40 to $50, and a wagon which is old and worn, worth $10 or $15.00 Q. What property, and what was the value thereof have you sold or conveyed within 2 years prior to the date of this application? Answer none whatever Q. What income, if any, do you receive? Answer none. Q. Are you in indigent circumstances; that is, are you in actual want, and destitute of property and means of subsistence? Answer I am - I depend on others for help to live. Q. Are you unable by your labor to earn a support? Answer I am unable Q. Have you transferred to others any property of value of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under this law? Answer I have not Q. Did you ever desert the Confederacy? Answer No Q. Have you been continuously since the first day of January 1880, a bona fide resident citizen of this State? Adkins, who is a reputable practicing physician of this County, who being by me duly sworn on oath, states that he has carefully and thoroughly examined Z.W. Ketchum, applicant for pension, and finds him laboring under the following disabilities, which render him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn a support for himself: I have examined Mr. Z.W. Ketchum and he received a wound in the right side of his neck which has never been cured he has in connection with this wound a very nervous complication of troubles which disqualifies him from manual labor. Ketchum for a pension under the Confederate Pension Law of this State, approved May 12, A.D. 1899; that the answers of said applicant to the questions propounded were made under oath as the same appear in writing in the foregoing application; that the affidavits of the witnesses who are credible citizens were made before me as the same hereinbefore appear, and that the foregoing affidavit of Doctor J.W. Adkins who is a reputable practicing physician of this County, was made before me. I also certify that the said applicant Z.W. Ketchum, is not an inmate of the Texas Confederate Home, nor otherwise disqualified under the provision of Section 12, of the Confederate Pension Law. I further certify that after considering all the proceedings had before me relative to the said application for a pension by the said Z.W. Killingsworth; age 63 years and reside in Cherokee County, Texas at present ANSWER to Second Interrogatory: I am acquainted with Z.W. Ketchum, and knew him during the Confederate War. ANSWER to Third Interrogatory: I know that Z.W. Ketchum enlisted and served in the Confederate War. And saw him many times under fire. ANSWER to Fourth Interrogatory: Z.W. Ketchum served in Company K, 19th Texas Cavalry Regiment, Parsons Brigade. I do not know the exact term of his service. He was there to my personal knowledge in 1863 and May 21st 1865 discharged. ANSWER to First Cross Interrogatory: I know that Z.W. Ketchum served in Company K, 19th Texas Cavalry, because I served in the same regiment with him. I am the Financial Agent of the Texas State Penitentiaries. ANSWER to Second Interrogatory: I am acquainted with Z.W. Ketchum, have known him from 35 to 36 years; knew him first in the Confederate Amry. ANSWER to Third Interrogatory: I know that Z.W. Ketchum enlisted and served in the Confederate War. ANSWER to Fourth Interrogatory: Z.W. Ketchum served in Company K, 19th Texas Cavalry Regiment, Parsons Brigade, and served about 3 years; do not remember the exact date of enlistment and the date of disbanding; I think it was in May 1865, when we were disbanded. ANSWER to First Cross Interrogatory: I know that Z.W. Ketchum served in Company K, 19th Texas Cavalry, because I served in the same company and regiment with him, and personally knew and know him.
