McDonald was married to Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Clemons on 14 Aug 1867 in Washington County, Texas. Betty's father, Ira Clemons was awarded a land grant for serving in the Republic of Texas militia during the 1830's and 1840's. It was this same land (later Lee County) where McDonald Phears helped his father-in- law, that Phears (and wife Betty) donated one acre for a school, known as the Phears School, where the Phears Community of Lee County took it's name. This was located about three miles east of Lexington on U.S. Hwy 77. McDonald had a previous marriage to Sarah L. Vinson, on 28 Apr 1862, in Washington County. I believe Phears married Betty after Sarah's death. McDonald served in Company G of the 10th Texas Infantry CSA during the War for Southern Independence. He died 4 Dec 1895, the result of a drunk wagon-driving accident. McDonald is buried in the Guthrie Cemetery, also on land once part of Ira Clemon's land grant, some of which was sold to George Washington Guthrie, hence the name Guthrie Cemetery.
