Bannerman came to Leon County, Texas circ 1855 with his family. He owned many slaves and built a plantation in Leon County, Tx. His most notable achievement was the creation of the "Bannerman ditch" which turned useless land into productive areas by reverse irrigation, instead of providing water, he used the ditch to drain off excess water into the Trinity River. I visited the property with Jeanne Bannerman Alexander and her brothers the date of this photo and the ditch is still in use today for the exact same purpose. The tombstone is the only one in the area and is located on a hill where the homestead is presumed to have been located.
