He owned two pharmacies in the early 1800's. He married Mary (not sure of last name) who was from Boston, Massachusetts. She was born in 1798 and is believed to have been a "nannie". The Smith's had a daughter, Anna Mariah. In 1827 or 1829 the Smith's went to Kentucky and joined a wagon train headed for Texas. They applied for a grant and later bought another tract. They may have obtained their land through the Galveston Bay & Texas Land Company in New York. Their property was part of Joseph Vehlein's grant and was located near Liberty. According to a muster roll, Smith might have taken part in the Battle of Fort Velasco in 1832. By 1834, Mary and daughter Anna were living in a boarding house in Anahuac. Her husband is not listed in the census so he may have deserted her. Smith was a member of the Liberty Company of Volunteers who fought at the Battle of San Jacinto. He received a grant for his service. In 1838, Smith went to the sight of this land to have it surveyed and sold and was murdered. Smith's widow, Mary, married on lived common-law with William A. Smith, a resident in same Anahuac boarding house. He was listed as a sailor in the census of 1834. Additional Comments: I need to confirm when and where the Smiths lived in New York as well as when and where they arrived in Texas. I'd like to confirm the murder story.
