Limestone County, Texas Cemetery Surveys -- Armour Cemetery east Submitted by: Harvey L. Cox http://www.texasroots.us/ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ------------------------------------------------ THE HISTORY OF ARMOUR CEMETERY by Florence Vinson Reed After the village of Armour was settled in 1873, families began to bury in the new cemetery. This cemetery was located on a plot donated by Jim Armour and was next to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Then as the lots in this plot was filled, they moved to a plot across the street to another plot. When this plot was filled, they moved to a plot joining the Coolidge City limits, which is the current burying ground. R.P. Merrill came from Alabama in the early 80̓s and went into the mercantile business. In 1903, he relocated his business in Coolidge and continued until his death. His son, Billy, and daughter, Pearl, then ran the business until their deaths. As the Merrill family plot was in the second cemetery, Pearl left a memorial in her will and the cemetery bears her name, "Pearl Merrill Cemetery". In reading the obits in the Oak Hill, you notice no obits excepting the little verse to the Scott child, "Our darling one has gone on before to greet us on the blissful shore". Almost all the markers, in the Armour Cemetery are slender little shafts, now leaning drunkenly, bearing inscriptions of verse or little bits of history such as: "Jay Riggs, Texas Chauffer, 36 Sig. Corps. April 21, 1938" "James Armour was drowned while swimming in the Munger tank September 5, 1884" "Stranger pause and shed a tear for the little one buried here thousands of miles from its Mother dear" Pearl Merrill Cemetery has markers with obits. The one I like best is the one written by Mark Twain for his daughter and quoted on the marker for Julia Williams, grand daughter of the bugler for the Jack's Creek reunion for many years. She died during the flu epidemic in 1918. It reads "Warm summer sun shine brightly here, warm southern wind blow softly here, green sod above, lie light, lie light. Good night, dear heart, good night, good night. This well may be the wish we have for all our departed spirits."
