J.P. Brown served as a Captain in the Confederate States Army and was a member of the Texas House of Representatives in 1879-1880. J.P. Brown's brother, Thomas Jefferson Brown, was Chief Justice of the Texas Court from 1911-1915. He served in the 21st Texas Legislature during the regular session January 8 to April 6, 1889 and the 22nd session January 3 to April 13, 1891 and the called session March 14 to April 12, 1892.
