Lowry for $1025, land description: East half of Southeast quarter and Southwest quarter of Southeast quarter and Northwest quarter of Southeast quarter of Section 14, Township 15, Range 6 East, 160 acres. Androes- 18- Teacher- MS Elizabeth Ayres- 44- born NC Elizabeth 9, John 7, Rodney 5, Edward 3- all born MS. In the 1880 census Lansford lived next to a Cato Ayres. He was a black man and his parents born NC. Cato was a slave for Col. Ayers, he stayed on after the war and worked in the blacksmith shop called the Ayers Shop in Attala Co, MS. Cato had a brother Will Ayers d. 1938 in Attala Co, MS. It is not known if Cato Ayers and family came to TX with Col. & Bettie Ayers. This is the info , I have located on Ben Ayers, former slave of Col. Lansford Ayers. He was living in 1870 in Durant, MS in Holmes Co. In 1850, Col. Ayers owned 10 slaves according to the 1850 Slave Schedule. Ben & Cato were slaves of Col. Ayers that stayed on after the war to help in the Wagon Implement & Blacksmith Shop, called the Ayers Shop in Attala Co., MS. Col. Lansford Ayers married Elizabeth "Bettie" Long Andrews. Col. Ayers was born in 1815 in Lynchburg, VA. He died in 1888 in Limestone Co, TX. It is not known what happened to Ben & his family after this time.
