This cemetery is now on the property of Mr. & Mrs. Sam McCollum III. These two graves are close to the McCulloch County and San Saba County line. One grave is the infant son of "Bill" William Henry Brown and wife, Mary Weldon Page. The other grave is their infant granddaughter and child of Essie Brown and her husband, Jim Wagner. Mar. 11, 1844 Apr. 7, 1900 RUDOLPH, Heinrich ,1849 ,1883 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOLDIERS' WATERHOLE BURIALS This area has been donated to the public by Louis and Tom Moorman and the Moorman Ranch. During the years of 1850 -1969, Soldiers' Waterhole served as a natural fort for early travelers. U.S. soldiers under the command of Robert E. Lee used this site while traveling the nearby military road and patrolling the area for Indians. Westbound immigrants also camped here prior to the Civil War. It was at this site that 27 Indians surprised and massacred 18 men, women, and children, burned their wagons and stole their horses. These 18 people were respectfully buried by the U.S. Cavalry Soldiers. To reach Soldiers' Waterhole, go north from the court house in Brady until you reach Hwy. 190 intersection. Turn right (east) and go 4.6 miles. Turn right on County Road 412. You will pass the East Sweden Cemetery. Continue for 2.5 miles on this dirt road until you reach the bridge that crosses Onion Creek. The rock formation fort and historical markers are on the right. It is the largest oak in this part of the state, covering over 8,000 sq, feet of earth. The first recorded burial is that of Benjamin J. Smith, who was killed and scalped by Indians. Later, Marion Watts was buried here. There are, also, several soldiers buried here as well as the bones of three Indian braves who have gone to their happy hunting grounds. The spring located at this ranch house was a long ago meeting place for Indians. The name, Wau-Ban-See, is an Indian name meaning "Earth Mirrored in the Water." The legend surrounding the burial located at Wau-Ban-See is that it is the grave of a traveling preacher.
