Stanford Chapel Cemetery, McLennan Co. TX Contributed for use in TXGenWeb Archives by deewils@attglobal.net Copyright. Hooper This is the grave markers in this cemetery. It is a pretty setting for a cemetery. Setting back off the road surrounded by trees with many trees throughout the cemetery. The cemetery is completely enclosed by a chain link fence and is nicely kept up. Several of the plots have fences around them. Edna Faye STANFORD, The Treasurer of Cemetery Assn. told me that in 1969, there were 161 graves here. Today, I counted 160 and of course, several have been buried since 1969. In the Fall & Puckett Funeral Home Records compiled by Mr. John USRY, there are a number of burials that I did not find. The previous comments were made by an unknown individual. Parts of this record have been annotated to clarify some of the individual relationships. (Ron L. W on Chapel Rd. This cemetery is named for the Reverend Thomas Stanford, a pioneer Methodist minister who moved to Texas from Arkansas in 1862 with his wife and family. They, with the E. R. Barcus family, established a school, church and cemetery. The Stanfords' daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Thomas Richey, donated five acres of land for this graveyard in 1875. The first recorded burial occurred in 1875. After years of neglect the graveyard was restored in 1962, and by 1965 a cemetery association was formed to maintain the site. The cemetery continues to serve the community.
