COWAN ^Ö DEAD ON LINER CRESPI SECRETARY ^Ö TREASURER DIES EN ROUTE TO EUROPE Lee F. Cowan, secretary-treasurer of Crespi and company of Waco dropped dead Sunday morning on the Cunard liner ^ÓScythia,^Ô in mid-ocean, according to information reaching Waco Tuesday. Heart trouble was said to have been the cause of death. Mr. Cowan left Waco about two weeks ago, and sailed from New York for Liverpool Jan. 25. He was en route to Europe to join Mrs. Cowan, who is at present in Italy with Mrs. Pio Crespi and young son. It had been planned to spend the winter in Europe and return to Waco in the spring. Take Body to Liverpool The body has been taken to Liverpool, where it will be prepared for sending back to Waco. No definite information has yet been received as to when it will reach here for burial. Mr. Cowan was about 60 years old and had been a resident of Waco for the last 20 years. For the last 13 years he has been financial manager of Crespi & Co., having occupied this position ever since the formation of that company. Previous to joining that cotton firm he was in the cotton business for himself. Mr. Cowan^Òs wife, Miss Myrtle Pendleton, before her marriage, was a daughter of the late Lieutenant Governor Pendleton of Temple. Dudney, who died Thursday night, took place yesterday afternoon at 3 o^Òclock from the Brook Avenue Baptist church, Rev. W.T. Turner officiating. Interment was at Oakwood cemetery The following were pallbearers: Active, W.C. McCollum, I.W. Barrett, W.B.A. Newton, J.W. McMurrain, O.J. Hodges and E.T. Smith. Honorary, H.G. Floyd, A.J. GARLAND^ÒS ILLNESS FATAL PIONEER RESIDENT OF WACO PASSES AWAY FRIDAY MIDNIGHT Mrs. Elizabeth Covalt Garland, wife of Ben C. Garland, pioneer residents of Waco, died at 12 o^Òclock Friday night at the family residence, 1119 North Fifth street, after an illness of only four days. Mrs. Garland was 69 years old. Death resulted from acute indigestion. Mrs. Garland is survived by her husband, four daughters and one son, Mesdames Frank Trau and Jack Foster, Waco; Mrs. Ruby Garland, Washington D.C.; Mrs. Wilder Anthony, Ben Lomond, Cal.; and one son, Hugh A. Garland, Waco. Three sisters also survive, Mrs. Jennie Barbette, Port Neches, Texas, and Mrs. Kate Duty of Tehachapee, Cal.; Mrs Charles Ockander, Waco. Mrs. Garland was born in Leesburg, Va., and came to Waco in 1872 with her parents. Mrs. Garland during the years of her residence in Waco has been very active in all organizations having for their aim the upbuilding of the individuals and the community, and was greatly beloved. She was president of Mary West chapter, U.D.C., and had been very active in this work. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church and a teacher in the Sunday school. CLAIRE TWEEDEY DIES AT VALLEY MILLS Mrs. Claire Tweedey, widow of Dabney Tweedey, died at her home in Valley Mills, Friday morning at 10 o^Òclock at the age of 46. Mrs. Tweedey lived in Waco before her marriage, after which she went to Valley Mills where she remained for 10 years. For the past two years she has been ill at the home of her sister, Mrs. J.L. Ebling of Forest City, Ark. She is survived by a daughter, Gladys Tweedey; a son, Rosser Tweedey; her father, J.D. Linsday of Shreveport, La.; four sisters, Mrs. J.L.Ebling of Forest City, Ark.; Mrs. Connie Jones of Denton, Texas; Mrs. Walter Noble, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. G.C. Witt of Waco, and a brother, Walter H. WACO NEWS TRIBUNE Saturday, February 24, 1922 Mrs. John Wallis Dies At Son^Òs Home in Waco SHE HAD BEEN IN POOR HEALTH SEVERAL YEARS Mrs. John Dora Wallis, 58, died Friday morning at 6 o^Òclock at the home of her son, E.L. Wallis, 1234 North Sixteenth street. She had been in poor health several years. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o^Òclock at Bosqueville, where the body will be taken by Undertaker F.M. Compton, services in charge of Rev. T.D. Ellis, pastor of the Methodist church at that place. Mrs. Wallis was born near Waco and has livedin the county all her life. She is survived by the son in Waco, one daughter in Duncan, Okla., Mrs. J.C. Blystone; she also has four sisters, Mesdames Jack Taylor, Waco; Joe Patrick, Bosqueville; H.T. Kenedy, Utopia, Texas, and S.N. DeHay, China Springs.
