McLennan Co. TX - Obits from November 1944 - Waco News Tribune From: Mary Kay Snell Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ------------------------------------------------ Waco News Tribune November 1, 1944 TRIBUTE PAID TO K. H. AYNESWORTH IN FINAL SERVICE Baylor's Flag is at Half Mast; Stevenson Will Name Successor on Regents' Board Funeral services were held at 5 p. m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church for Dr. Kenneth Hazen Aynesworth, 71, surgeon and educator who died in a local hospital Monday afternoon. Dr. J. M. Dawson officiated at the services and burial was in Oakwood cemetery. In tribute to the memory of Dr. Aynesworth founder of the Baylor University Texas Collection, the university's flag was flown at half-mast Tuesday. Paying an oral tribute to him over the air at the chapel service Tuesday morning, President Pat. M. Neff said in part: "Dr. Aynesworth was an honored ex-student of this institution, an outstanding physician of the south west, an all-round citizen, a great scholar and gatherer of historical relics, founder of the Baylor Texas collection, benefactor of this institution in other aspects, a regent of the University of Texas, and one of the foremost surgeons of this generation." The Baylor executive stated that it was his privilege to be a student at Baylor at the same time that Dr. Aynesworth was and that their lives had been so intimately associated since that time that he could say the two of them had walked down the years together. In keeping with his custom of waiting until after the funeral services for a deceased member of the board of regents before appointing a successor, Gov. Coke Stevenson told the United Press Tuesday that he would not announce the name of the successor, a physician, until Wednesday. Dr. Aynesworth's term as regent was to expire on Jan. 1, 1945. Waco News Tribune Wednesday, November 1, 1944 STANLEY GUNN DIES Stanley Gunn, formerly of Waco, who was the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Houston Chronicle correspondent in the Philippines, died Monday of wounds sustained during a Japanese bombing attack on Tacloban on Oct. 25, MacArthur headquarters notified his wife in Forth Worth Tuesday. It was only last Friday that a message was received from Gunn himself informing his wife that he, who had been in the Pacific area since last June writing about Texans on the war scene, had suffered a broken leg in the bombing attack which took the life of Asahel Bush, Associated Press war correspondent. His message at that time said he expected to be home in Fort Worth in a few weeks. Gunn, a native of Texas, was 30. He was accredited to General MacArthur's forces, and with the invasion of the Philippines he landed with the fifth wave of American troops on Leyte. Among his front dispatches from the embattled war front were stories describing a series of Japanese air raids, and of them Gunn wrote, "there's nothing like a grandstand seat during an air raid." Gunn received his bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Texas in 1937 and worked on the San Antonio Light and Austin Daily Tribune before joining the Star-Telegram staff in 1943. He was the Waco Tribune-Herald correspondent while attending the university. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Elmer G. Gunn of Austin.
