To encourage settlement of the new frontier in the 1830's & 40's, the Republic of Texas granted large portions of land to prospective impresarios. Among the more notable was the one issued to Francis Fisher, Buchard Miller, and Joseph Baker. Comprising some three million acres of land between the Llano and Colorado Rivers, it became known as the Fisher and Miller Colony. Today, we stand upon a portion of that land known as the H.W. Volk Survey 284. As we view this pleasant valley (and indeed, this place was once known as Pleasant Valley), it is not easy to imagine the tragedy and grief that has sometimes gripped this area. As war clouds gathered near the setting of "Gone With the Wind", westward came a devout Methodist family-that of Henry Parks. Here they settled in the early 1860's, having found abundant grazing for their cattle. But the quiet and solitude of the valley was momentarily disrupted when a band of Comanche Plains Indians descended upon the pioneer family with an outpouring of anger and vengeance at the encroachment of the settler upon the redskin's hunting grounds. The awesome happenings of that night have been retold many times. Henry and Nancy Parks and their young grandson, Billy, were savagely slain, their home burned and the cattle driven away. Next morning the gruesome sight was discovered, and neighbors laid the Parks family to rest where they were slain. Henry and his wife were old by frontier standards; he was 77 and she was 72. The three bodies, all in one grave, became the first burial in what we know today as Little Saline cemetery. The sad news of the massacre reached relatives in Georgia six months later, and a memorial service was held there the first Sabbath in December, 1862. The next known grave was that of young Isaac Boyce, who died May 7, 1879. Four years later, Jane Keese was buried here. The next four buried in this cemetery were all veterans of the Civil War-Asa Saunders, in 1883; George W. Ake, in 1885; James Amberson and William Brewer, both in 1886. A small child of John and Betty Pearl's was laid to rest November 2, 1886. Eleven days later, the owner of the land, Ely I. Boyce, executed a deed to Menard County for two acres of land 18 miles southeast of Menard. To insure proper designation of the property, Boyce specified the land was to be used for a church, school and graveyard. Subsequent deeds from the Boyce family are on file in the Courthouse at Menard, and a total of four acres is included in the transactions. The old trail boss, Samuel A. Hunter, lies here-"Sam Hunter's our boss, we call him the best that e'er drove cattle o'er the trail in the West", and not far away is the grave of one of his traildrivers, George M. Pearl. They had gone up the trail with the Seth Mabry cattle, leaving the stock pens near here, and going up to Wyoming and the northern territory. Old Grandmother Charlotte Pearl died June 2, 1916, after living almost a century here on earth, and her obituary stated that the largest crowd ever assembled in this community gathered here for her funeral. You can walk around viewing the nearly three hundred headstones, and the names theron read like a directory of early-day settlers in the Little Saline Valley. It would be a monumental task to name them all today. In the not so long ago, graves were dug by hand, and it was considered an honor and privilege to be able to perform this last task for a dear friend or neighbor. Most funeral services were graveside, and you can almost hear the resounding strains of "In the Sweet By and By: and "Shall We Gather at the River". We think today of the many, many tears of grief that have fallen upon this hallowed ground, and we pause to revere the memory of those who have gone before us. Here, the bluebonnets mingle with the grass, and the oak trees cast their shade during the hot summer months. One feels nearer to God as he beholds the beauty of nature in this quiet resting-place of our ancestors. The Little Saline Cemetery Association has been organized for the purpose of maintaining the cemetery throughout the coming years. Originally, the schoolhouse for the Saline district #4 was located nearby, but has long since been removed to its present site atop the hill, where it serves as the Saline Community Center. Veterans of many wars were buried here, and a memorial stone bears witness to the heroic death of Bill M. Pearl, who gave his live in World War II.
