Milam County TX - Cemetery - Old Fort Griffin Cemetery ******************************************************************************* This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Milam County Genealogical Society with permission from Mrs. John T. Martin (nee: Evelyn Curtsinger) Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ******************************************************************************* CEMETERY RECORDS - INTRODUCTION All of the cemeteries copied lie in the northeastern portion of Milam County (except Fort Griffin). Every effort has been made to copy all tombstone inscriptions; however, many graves are marked only with metal markers (no longer readable), footstones, wooden stobs, rocks, or clumps of iris. All graves have been noted -- both those with or without tombstones. Those without inscriptions are included to assist those searching for gravestones -- which do not exist. They are noted as follows, example: McNEILL, James Hugh, Aug. 18, 1876 - Mar. 3, 1958 (2*) JOHNSON, W. T., 1897-1926 The figure within the parenthesis (2*) indicates that two graves without tombstone inscriptions lie between or near the graves of McNeill and Johnson. Perhaps they belong to members of these families. It was necessary to edit most of the inscriptions, i.e., abbreviate dates, omit verses, etc., but no information was omitted regarding the names on the stones, and relationships were included when it was at all possible. Sometimes a stone read "Father" on the stone itself, sometimes on the footstone. Every effort has been made to preserve such notations. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Old Fort Griffin Cemetery, Milam County, Texas -- 1836 Restored 1956 -- (Marker placed by Texas Society Daughters of the American Colonists, Entrance 200 Yards South.) This metal marker is located on Texas Farm Road #436 next to the granite marker erected in 1936 by the State of Texas designating the site of Fort Griffin. It reads as follows: Site of a picket fort on Little River Commonly called FORT GRIFFIN. Also known as Fort Smith and Little River Fort. Erected by Geo. B. Erath and 20 Texas Rangers in November, 1836 as a protection against Indians. Abandoned as a military post before the Santa Fe Expedition Camped here, June 24-29, 1841 but used by settlers many years as a place of defense against the Indian. HISTORICAL NOTE: Although Fort Griffin Cemetery is located in what is now Bell Co., Texas, it is included with the Milam County Cemetery Records due to its close association with early Milam County settlers. It is located on what is now the H. D. Hartrick Farm about 2 miles west of Little River, Tex. which is 9 miles east of Belton and 8 miles south of Temple. It is enclosed by a wire fence.
