The site is slightly out of the town of Cameron. Going southeast on Texas Hwy 36, cross the 1 mile bridge, continue SE for approximately 3 miles to FMR2095.Turn left from hwy 36 and proceed east for 2.5 miles, turn left to CO road 244 and continue north taking curve to right and continue for 1 mile and cemetery is located on left side about 30 yards off the road. Today, the cemetery is covered with tree growth and overgrown brush and weeds. Some graves indicate birth as early as1820 during the post-colonial indentured slave era. Other graves show individuals who were members of "The Woodsman of the World" organization and Masonic lodge members. Some of the buried have a large rock or stone in the ground representing the head and a smaller stone marking the foot as boundaries for their grave plot. There are others with unreadable markers and many with markers destroyed and missing. Records indicate that these were migrants from NC, SC, Ala., Tenn., Miss., and other southern states relocating to Texas after the Civil War and the enforcement of the "Emancipation Proclamation which declared freedom for many enslaved in these states. Records also indicate many were born recently after slavery (1865-1880). The records show that 20 of the 40 persons listed on burial records were FORMER SLAVES. One can see that many in this group were children. These early African Americans cleared the land and constructed a church, The African Methodist Episcopal Church. The church also substituted as a school until a community school was constructed nearby on land donated to the school district by the church. The church building was moved to higher land on the property of Dan Young until his death. It now stands in a perfectly preserved state on a nearby ranch, in its original condition to this day. As one will see, many deaths occurred in 1918. Their deaths can be attributed to the 1918 flu pandemic. A recent organization formed by citizens of Cameron and Milam County for the restoration and perpetual upkeep of the cemetery in honor of those FORMER SLAVES and the ones who cleared the way for future descendants. SPECIAL PERMISSION WAS GIVEN BY NORINNE HOLDER HOLMAN FOR USE OF BURIAL RECORDING INDEX LISTING FROM THE BOOK TITLED, 170 Years of Cemetery Recordings in Milam County, Texas.
