All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/tx/txfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Rob Perkins rperkins@stx.rr.com January 19, 2008, 5:19 pm WP Perkins To Sons Galveston Dec the 27th 1863 Dear sons yours of ??? the 21 first was received yesterday five days from the time it was written much sooner than you received mine I received the good new of your health I am afraid your mother will ??? in her health by exposing her self you must persuade her not to do it and help her attend to all the business that you can in that way you can be of great benefit to her mind everything that she tells you for she will ??? sure not to tell you anything rong you complain of your uncle Toms paying no attention to my business I did not ask him to do it when I left thinking thinking you uncle Moses would be there to do it since I have heard that he will not I have written your uncle Tom a long letter asking him to attend close to my business and if he fails to do it I will always think hard of him I think you will have no excuse to complain for the future I attended to him when he was in the army better than my own (underlined twice) and if he fails to do as mutch for me when it is in my power I never can forget it particulary under the preasant circumstances I think I will get to come home the 7th of February and then I can attend to my own affairs and no thanks to any body it will be furlow for three months which will give me a chance to make a trip to Eagle Pass which I intend to do I have got my plans partly arranged her to that end and if I succeed I will higher a substitute in Mexico and put him in for the war I want my ??? taken good care of in order to make the trip there are two other men here that will go with me they have both been to Brownsville know the ropes I can higher a substitute there for $200 in spectic (?) is which I am so anxious to go I was surprised at the weights of our hogs you have got meat enough for one year you must not sell any until George Newman get back for we may need it if he succeeds in buying negroes you will have money enough to buy a young negroe I am glad your mother has bought you a pony I did not examine him but think he is the best saddle pony that I have seen for a long time if my corn is scarce your mother wright to it your uncle Tom have my bay horse to ride for it it will take too much corn to feed two hoarses and have nothing for them to to but to ride occasionally he could take good care of him you (crossed out) she might need him to plow if Newman dosnot get back in time I want you to take good care of our hogs I suppose we have got a fine lot of pigs by this time you must go to school to Mr Anderson until I get home if you can do no better I will then make arrangements for you to go to Sulivan your mother could not do without you and I gone you must go to scool all you can when you get a chance for I fear your opportunities will be limited to get an education if the war continues long so go to school and learn all you can learn to answer my letters yourselves without troubling your mother Christmas has past off here very quietly Christmas eve the brass bands belonging to the different redgments plaid until lait at knight a few soldiers got drunk and was put in the gard house but every other way the town was quiet there is a number of the enemy ships in sight but we do not fear them I have not received an answer to any of the letters that I have written to your mother the only letter that I have received from her was the one that Britt brought with him he is getting verry anxious to get a letter from his wife when I wrote to your uncle Tom I forgot that I saw Dr Clark drunk as usual but says he has made a fortune since he come to Tex he is one of the surgeons of the army and seamed to be flush of money he was verry glad to see me he and a man by the name of Nelson are the only men on the island that I ever saw before I came to Tex I promist to write to your little sisters but I must defer it for the preasant you must love all three of them and help your mother take good care of them I have nothing more to write to you at preasant get your mother to answer this for you as soon as you get it and you must not say a word about what I have written about your uncle Tom or of my plans of going to Mexico for it might have a bad affect tell all of the negroes howdee for me and hug and ciss Moses and little sisters for me your affectionate father Walker P.
