He has been an Asst. Atty. Gen. for the last four years. T. Ratto, wholesale dealer of candy and fruits in Galveston failed last week. Hon. John D. McCall will locate his insurance business in San Antonio. Students of the A & M College presented a gold-headed cane to Gen. Ross J. W. Terry of Galveston has followed-up his fight against Sen. Culberson appointed Dr. Rosser of Dallas as Supt. of the Terrell Insane Asylum Statewide Vote Count for Governor: Culberson-207,167 the winner...no ballots from Tarrant and Fannin counties. Article: Next Tuesday, Jan 23rd (sic) the Texas Legislature will elect the Hon. Horace Chilton to the U.S. Senate. Chilton was born on December 29, 1853 in Smith Co. on the farm of his grandfather, B. L. Goodman. His father was a soldier in the Mexican War and served in the Texas Legislature. He took part in the Civil War and was a Major of the Third Texas Cavalry. Waco News wants the Texas Legislature to abolish prayers because it costs tax payers $10 a day for a chaplain. Hon. J. J. Davis of Falls Co. says he could offer up the prayers at no charge. Dr. Hamilton Tabaulet and Dr. J. M. Wakings fought a duel in New Orleans over the valedictory election in the Tulane Medical Dept. Stockwater is reported very scarce in many portions of the [Milam] county. There is a new Saloon at the Santa Fe Depot on the lot owned by Dr. Cass. Mrs. Webster has opened a restaurant in the old Banister Bldg. near the First National Bank. Rev. D. M. Stovall, Congregational Methodist will preach at Yarrellton. The boilers and engines for the waterworks arrived this week. Grass fire last Saturday evening [Jan 12] at the Baptist Church. Sam Houston, who has been with Mr. Hortsmann for many years has accepted a position with B. J. Baskin. Hon. H. F. Smith on the Financial Committee in the Texas Legislature. Master Perry Wilkerson entertained his numerous little friends on last Thursday [Jan. 10] on the occasion of his 12th birthday. His mother, Mrs. Davis was assisted by other lady friends. Cox of Dublin, Erath Co. shot a fellow employee named Rowe. P. C. White of Greenville along with his family, his mother and guest, Miss McGlasson of Paris were poisoned by eating canned corn. L. Lewis of Dallas sat on a hot stove and was burned. Ruby Madding, a little child of Live Oak Point, Brazoria Co. was bitten by a rattlesnake and died. The home of Dr. J. J. Burroughs of Houston was robbed by burglars. W. B. Smith of Italy, Ellis Co. was shot in the hand while toying with a gun. The home of Mrs. George Robinson of Palestine was robbed by burglars. Tom Morgan of Abbott accidentally shot himself in the shoulder when he knock his gun off the bed. John A. Watson of Lockhart and family were slight poisoned by tinned food. J. J. Jolley and wife of Lockhart along with son-in-law Ed McMahon were slight poisoned by tinned food. Geo. Day, colored man of McLennan Co. in jail for selling mortgaged property. The home of Mrs. Julia Koffenbege of Houston was robbed. Joe Marier was shot and killed at Lano by Wm. Matthews. C. H. Thompson was shot and killed at Burlingame, a switch five miles west of Tyler, by a conductor. B. Meeles, aged 50, of Mesquite fell dead while sitting next to his fireplace. Horace Chilton has been nominated by the democrats to the U.S. Senate. President Cleveland signed a bill establishing a lighthouse at the entrance of Galveston harbor. Gen L. M. Openheimer of Austin was appointed to the Penitentiary Board. Wing Leng, a Chinaman, was robbed and murdered while on the way from Barstow to his home at Toyah, Reeves Co. The fruit orchard of Geo. Erskins of Angleton was destroyed by fire. The 4-year old daughter of Mr. Court of McKinney was severely burned when her clothes ignited from a stove while her mother was making soup. Lewis Knight and son, Lem, were arrested at Graham, Young Co., on a charge of counterfeiting money. Mrs. Harvey Cook at Denton was burned while putting out flames that were consuming the clothing of a small child. John Conley, age 21, a farmer, died at Oakwoods, Leon Co. on Jan 29th. On the 11th of this month, he was married to his wife, age 38. The little daughter of A. F. Hold of Brenham was burned about the face and head when a lamp exploded and set fire to the child's hair.
