Hon. C. F. Cohron of Franklin is moving to Dallas. Sen. Crowely will not tender his resignation until March 4th. Dist. Judge Blackburn decided in a case at Belton that the election of aldermen in that city by wards is unconstitutional. Last Wednesday [Jan. 30?] William Ward killed 4 men and wounded 2 others at Millican Section House. He committed the deed with a Winchester. He was captured and taken to the Bryan jail. Office Asst. R. R. Lockett of the Attorney General's Office has written an opinion to the Mayor of Brenham setting forth the ruling that towns of less than 10,000 cannot hold ward alderman elections from the Belton Journal. Hon. E. L. Anthony from Milam Co. wants to defeat any measure in the Texas Legislature looking to curtail the fees of county officials from the Lockhart Register. Clarkson Community Items: Mrs. Lou Griffin died Monday, Jan 28. Mrs. Griffin was a very exemplary Christian lady and leaves a large family and a host of friends and relatives who will mourn her death. The remains were interred in the Little River Cemetery. Jones Prairie Community Items: P. J. Thompson from the "forks of the creek" visited. I. R. Wallace Chambers received a number of compliments on his management of a case in Judge English's court last Monday. Eld. T. A. Woods will occupy the pulpit at the Christian Church tonight. Our streets were crowded last Monday and a large number of horses changed hands. One horse was put up to the highest bidder and one dollar was all that was offered. Nick B. Turnham writes from Midland and that it has been visited by heavy snow. T. F. Hardy has been confined with a slow fever. Mrs. Hardy is convalescent from an attack of the fever. Robert McLane has received 2 cars of bran and 2 of flour. Jno. M. & J. D. Hefley's has just received a full stock of imported matting from China and Japan. John T. Arnold, manager of the County Farm, has some splendid dogs with which he captures all who escape. Mr. Arnold paid a good sum for them and will soon offer some pups for sale. Eld. Tom Smith will preach at the Christian Church on Sunday morning and evening. His topics "Heart felt Religion" and "A Grain of Mustard Seed." Charles F. Haynes visited and gave a series of mind reading exhibitions at the Cameron Opera House. His feats were about the same as those performed by Paul Alexander Johnston, which were reported in these columns some months ago. Last Sunday night, the northbound passenger engine on the Mission Route got disabled at Rosebud. Car Inspector Powers (of Cameron) took up another engine from Cameron and pulled the train into Waco. Last Monday, Gov. Culberson appointed Hon. T. S. Henderson a regent in the State University in the place of Amory Starr, of Harrison Co. List of Letters: by T. A. Marks returned to her home in Dallas after spending several months with her daughter, Mrs. S. E. Arnold. John C. Oxenford has left for Dallas to attend the meeting of the Odd Fellows. Texas News Briefs: Fire destroyed the Silver Moon Hotel in Houston. A 520 pound hog was killed at Coldsprings, San Jacinto, Co. S. H. Bradley, a Mexican War Veteran, of Tioga, Grayson Co. died on Jan 31st. The store of M. S. Greer of Kopperl, Bosque Co. was robbed. Mr. & Mrs. S. A. Shelburne of Bellville, Austin Co. recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Hiram Pearce, Justice of the Peace, Lebanon Pct., Collin Co. fell into a well and was drowned. The 1-year old daughter of Mrs. Maggie Ryder, a widow, of San Antonio drank carbolic acid and died a few hours later. The 2-year old son of Sam Holt, Carthage, Panola Co. was fatally burned by clothing being ignited from a bonfire. The Kenedy Headlight has changed from a populist to a democratic paper and its new name is the Kenedy Advance. Hamp Huff, farmer of Daly, Houston Co., was cutting down a tree when it fell the wrong direction and caught him under it, breaking his thigh. Mrs. E. Andrews of Marshall slipped off a gallery on the second floor of the Capitol Hotel and fell to the ground, a distance of 25', she died. Someone stole the horses, harness and carriage belonging to George Vandernelder of Yoakum. Galveston Bay froze over last week and fish were picked out of the water in considerable numbers, being chilled by the cold. The Brazos River froze over. It was thick enough to sustain the weight of a horse. Attachments suits are being filled in Waco against the Cotton Seed Oil Mill at Bruceville. This is the mill in which E. Tom Cox is a stockholder. J. F. McGuire, Supt. of the State Reformatory at Gatesville, is opposed to the fee system. Several stockholders of the First National Bank of Waco have been granted a temporary injunction restraining that institution from paying $1,400 on $75,000 worth of bank stock. W. C. Brann has resumed the publication of the Iconoclast at Waco from the Bryan Eagle. License to Marry: Henry Ables and Georgia Ann Smith. C. H. Ruby has opened up a grocery and confectionery in the R. S. Porter Bldg. C. M. Wilcox, book agent, committed suicide by taking morphine at a hotel in Rockdale. He was beyond middle age and was out of money. Robert McLane and Kate Paden were married at the Presbyterian Church at 8 o'clock, Tuesday, Feb 19th. Frank Pool and Perla Smilie were married at the Baptist Church in Baileyville at 4:30 o'clock on Sunday, Feb 17th. The piping & pumps at the Milam County Oil Mill froze-up & burst due to the freeze. A. D. Potts and Clara Hefley were married at the home of the bride's mother in Belton on Tuesday, Feb. 5th. Notice: Strayed from my home in Gause, Milam Co., on dun male mule colt 2-years colt by John Ditto. Rev. & Mrs. James Peeler celebrated his 78th birthday. Mamie Arnold, student of Baylor College, Belton, won a collection of books for the best essay on the 50th anniversary of the institution on Feb. 1st. C. H. Ruby sold his restaurant to T. A. Eggleston. Mrs. Bettie Thompson died Tuesday [Feb 11] evening. The funeral services took place yesterday afternoon [Wed, Feb 12] from the Baptist Church at 3 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. R. R. White and the remains were interred in the city cemetery. She was an excellent lady and leaves many friends to mourn her loss. About 3-weeks ago, Paul Allen, a negro, hit another negro, William Gigger on the head with a hoe and Gigger died last week. The difficulty took place on the S. P. Tindall Farm. Justice English held an inquest. Allen made his escape but Sheriff Bickett is making an earnest effort to catch him. On last Saturday [Feb 9] night, about 9 o'clock, the old county clerk's office building was nearly destroyed by fire. It is occupied by Capt. B. I. Arnold. He had a fire in the fireplace and the mantle and ceiling was on fire when it was discovered. John Watson has become associated with J. S. Hefley in the insurance, real estate, and loan agency business. Trial: State of Texas v. Jim Strickland, Ed Adams, John Turnham, Will Strickland and Jeff Rogers, charged with aggravated assault. Facts: Last October, a German dance was held 2-miles from Cameron and a dispute arose between C. H. Jinks and some young men. When Jinks had gotten ½ mile from the dance on his way home, he was overtaken by the defendants, attacked and severely beaten and left for dead. He crawled to a camp nearby and was carried home and recovered. Jim Strickland, Ed Adams and John Turnham were tried and fined 1-month in prison and fined $25, $75, and $50 respectively; Jeff Rogers turned State's evidence. Marshall Rogers, who years ago was a member of the Cameron Bar now lives in Corpus Christi. J. W. Jackson was run over and killed on Feb 12th by a freight train near Minerva. He lived on the road between here and Rockdale. He was deaf and did not hear the approach of the train. He leaves a wife, 6 children in destitute circumstances. Mrs. Fannie Barber, wife of the Hon. L. N. Barber, died at the family home last Monday [Feb 18] and interment took place in the New Cemetery Tuesday afternoon. Bob Marx stabbed Louis Evers with a pocket knife in a saloon in San Antonio. The home of Dr. H. F. Dickerson of Wolf City, Hunt Co., was destroyed by fire. Will Warren was run over and killed by an engine in the Santa Fe Yards at Cleburne. The 10-year old son of Van Warner of Beaumont was stuck by a Southern Pacific engine and killed. The little daughter of Sam Dean of near Tyler was burned to death when her clothes were ignited from an open fireplace. The 1896 session of the Grand Lodge, I.O.O.F. will be held in Houston. Rev. Geo. Pierson of the Old School Presbyterian Church at Henrietta, Clay Co. died a morning or two ago of heart disease. The servant house of Capt. F. L. Gregg of Rusk was burned and Lucy Wiggins, an old servant, was cremated. At Ambia, Lamar Co., Mrs. Ora Winston's 18-month old baby, fell into an open fireplace and was badly burned. Jule, the little daughter of Will Love of Lindale, Smith Co., was seriously burned and died. At Bonham, while milking, Mrs. Smith's 2-year old daughter fell into the fire and was severely burned and died. The horse of County Commissioner James I. Galloway of Franklin, Robertson Co. ran away throwing him and breaking his shoulder. Elize Jackson a cook at Mr. Chinski's at Navasota was severely burned while standing with her back to the stove. Tet Willis, farmer, of near Lufkin, Angelina Co., was found in the bushes where he'd frozen to death. John Gibson of Austin was found dead near Round Rock on Friday last. J. W. Jackson of Minerva, Milam Co., was run over by a stock train and killed Will Deskin, a brakeman, was killed on a Cotton Belt freight train near Tyler. S. C. Jackson of Sherman dropped dead of apoplexy just as he'd arrived home. Guilf Gibson shot and killed Bryant Holliman in a saloon at Richmond. Miss Ross McMahon of Dallas was burned when the gasoline stove she was filling exploded. Henry Olsen, an employee of the M. K. & T. Railroad was frozen to death near Smithville. Mrs. Martha Hardin of Terrell fell from the steps of the hotel at Gladewater, Gregg Co., and broke her arm. While working on a bridge, Wm. Harris at Liberty, Liberty Co., fell into the Trinity River and drowned. Carrie Roberts, 7-years old of Houston, fell into a fire, was severely burned and died. While feeding his stock, W. P. Watkins of McGregor fell dead. Heart failure was the cause. The 10-month old babe of W. C. Cehand of Marble Falls inhaled hot ashes down its throat and died. The store of L. G. McCartney of San Angelo was robbed and six Mexican thieves were arrested. Mrs. Joe Copeland of Rusk, Cherokee Co. was playing with her baby in front of the fireplace and her clothing ignited and she died soon after. Mr. Day, a livery stable man of Wharton went to the home of Mr. Croker, a farmer residing on Mustang Creek, Wharton Co. whereupon Mr. Croker shot him dead. Commissioners Court Proceedings.
