Price of A&M College Article: Money issue - Editorial In a telegram received on Thursday of last week, Jas. R. Mitchell had been killed that morning in Richmond, Fort Bend Co., no particulars were given. The daily papers, the next day, confirmed this and gave the particulars. Mitchell had been indited for murder in the Harris Co. Dist. Court on a case brought to Milam Co. on a change of venue and set for trial on Nov. 25th. He was in Cameron for several days week before last. On the night of Feb. 19, 1894, Mitchell was engaged in a shooting affair at the central depot in Houston, which resulted in the killing of Constable Sutton, together with Mr. Sparks and Mr. Gleason. Mitchell did not deny being the central figure but he claimed, self-defense. He was killed last Thursday by Kane Neal, a young man who had been arrested sometime since with a brother of Mitchell. They were charged with the murder of a negro and Neal got out of the trouble by turning state's evidence and this was the origin of the killing last week. Mitchell went into a restaurant in Richmond run by a colored woman for breakfast. Neal passed by and saw Mitchell eating. Neal soon returned and went into a back room to meet with Mitchell but got the drop on him and fired four shots and Mitchell was instantly killed. Mitchell was about 25-years old and was a small man, fair skin and light hair. Neal was arrested while he still held the smoking revolver in his hand. On Thursday of last week, Charles H. Neville, a railroad conductor and Sidney B. Lane, a brakeman, met in the hallway of the office of the Southern Pacific train dispatcher in Houston and settled a difficulty with revolvers. Lane was killed and Neville lived but a few hours and died. A. C. Love, former clerk at the Calvert post office, is on trial in the federal court at Waco for embezzlement.
