MILAM COUNTY TEXAS - Newspapers: Gleanings from the Cameron Hearld 1904 ****************************************************************************** File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Lynna Kay Shuffield USGenWeb Archives. Copyright. All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ****************************************************************************** Newspapers have played an important role through the years by not only bringing us local happenings in the community but also news from across the country and around the world. Over the years many records related to our ancestors were lost or destroyed in fires, floods and other natural disasters. Newspapers contain much information that may not be found elsewhere such as births, marriages, deaths, court notices, land sales, tax notices, businesses, etc. They also hold many glimpses of information in their community news and provide us with fascinating details about the lives of our ancestors. We can all learn a great deal from reading about our past and in turn we shall have a greater understanding and appreciation for the hardships and triumphs our ancestors endured while building a new life in a new land. Many newspapers managed to survive the test of time and can now be found at most state libraries on microfilm and most are available through inter-library loan for viewing at your local library. There are well over 100 million pages of newspapers preserved on microfilm in the United States alone. This is NOT an every name index to the newspapers. Only articles related to births, deaths, marriages, lynchings, murders, etc., for Milam County and the State of Texas are found in this newspaper abstract. The items included in the book are not verbatim recitations of the newspaper articles, they are abstracts or condensed versions. Always refer back to the original source, the actual newspaper. This book is comprised of newspaper abstracts from the Cameron Herald newspaper published in Cameron, Milam County, Texas and available for purchase on microfilm from Southwest Micropublishing, Inc. and from microfilm Caddo Mills News - Carrollton Chronicle - Reel # 1320034683, found at the Texas Newspaper Collection, Center for American History, University of Texas-Austin All issues of the newspapers are from the Southwest Micropublishing microfilm unless noted with (Texas Newspaper Collection) = = = = = = = To purchase a copy of the microfilm, contact: Southwest Micropublishing, Inc. 2627 E. The Herald plant was put in at Cameron in the autumn of 1875, and in 1882 the name of the paper was changed to that which it now bears. The publication is really 29 years old, and has had continuous publication. We have seen Cameron spring from a village to a splendid county seat, too, with a population of about 3,5000, a splendid system of city schools, two banks, waterworks, and good fire protection; ice factory and electric light plant, an oil mill, cotton compress and other enterprises that bring Cameron up to the station of a typical Central Texas town. We have labored steadily for the upbuilding of the city, are satisfied with the results. We have had strong and unwavering friends, enterprising men who appreciated the value of a staunch paper in a town, and they have encouraged and supported us in our unceasing labors. Our people have worked together harmoniously, and to this hearty spirit of cooperation, much of our success is due. Much remains to be done, and we trust that with unrelaxed efforts, the close of another decade will witness Cameron with a population of 10,000, and a city charter. Death - W. C. Article - AWill Collins Caught@ - Last Friday evening Sheriff Avriett returned from Waxahachie with Will Collins, negro, and placed him in jail. Sometime ago, Collins, under the assumed name of Richard Jackson, killed Jim Williams, negro, on the J. S. Hefley farm north of Cameron. Williams was killed by a blow that crushed his skull. About the time of the discovery of the crime, it was learned that Mrs Williams and Collins had disappeared. The officers in Cameron took up the case and out on Bear Creek, Constable Boles found Lula Williams and Collins in the woods and captured the woman. Collins succeeded in making an escape, Boles emptying his gun at him without effect. The next night Collins was chased with blood hounds but by walking on the top of fences he succeeded in avoiding capture. Sheriff Avriett offered a $25 reward that was published throughout the state. Last week in Ellis County, officers were out hunting crap shooters and on approaching a crowd of negroes, they discovered that one had left the crowd and was slipping o ff on his hands and knees, the location being in a cotton patch about 7-miles from Waxahachie. The officers hurried after the fugitive, who made a run for liberty, making for a creek bottom. The two deputy sheriffs fired five shots at him without effect, but by running in ahead of him and leveling a revolver in his face, Collins was induced to stop and surrender. When they asked him the cause of his flight, he replied he was accused of killing a man in Milam County. Sheriff Avriett was contacted. It is alleged Collins killed a negro woman and child in Robertson County 3-years ago and has been on the dodge every since. Since the killing of Williams, Collins has spent daylight in the woods, slipping out at night to procure something to eat. Farming - Jasper Shuffield, a large Beat 2 farmer near Maysfield was in Cameron some days ago, and related to us the result of his experiments in the cultivation of cotton this year. He planted some in February and followed this with a March planting, his intention being to make an early crop. One man on the place was tardy, and did not get his cotton in until April. The best cultivation possible was given to all and in production the April cotton distanced the other plantings and made half a bale to the acre. The crop from the February and March plantings was very light. Mr. Shuffield attributes this to the cold and backward spring. The cotton was chilled and stunted and all kinds of insects preyed upon it. The April planting came up in warm weather and grew off at once, having the lead of the other cotton in size of stalk and in fruitage. Had all his cotton been planted in April, his farming this year would have been satisfactory.
