Lewis, 90, were held at 2 p.m. at the Connally/Compton Funeral Home in Waco with Rev. Glen Pipes of Meadowbrook Baptist Church, Rockdale, officiating. Burial was in Waco Memorial Park. He died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 at the Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale. Rev. Lewis, a Rockdale resident the past 11/2 years, moving from Waco where he lived for 22 years, was born Dec. 22, 1912 in Waco to Parks Pennington Lewis and Julia Tabitha (Culpepper) Lewis. He and Cathryn Ferguson were married June 2, 1938 in Fort Worth. Rev. Lewis, a Baptist minister for over 45 years, was a member of the Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Rockdale. He had served as a Baptist minister at Friendship, OK, Oglesby, Henrietta, Seymour, Olton and Waco. He served as board member of the State Mission Commission, member of the board of Buckner Baptist Children's Home, moderator of several Baptist associations and a member of the singing group "The Scrap Irons." He was a graduate of Quanah High School, Baylor University and Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth and also a member of the Baylor University Century Club. Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Marshall Lewis; sisters, Rotha Dyer and Anna Parks Glover. Surviving are: Wife, Cathryn Lewis of Rockdale; son, John E. Lewis Jr. and wife Sunya of Spring; daughters, Joanna Gassiott and husband Ralph of Midland and Elaine Holliman and husband Gary of Rockdale; nine grandchildren, Cathryn and Frank McLendon, Leslie and Brent Hasselbach, Kyle Gassiott, Julie and Danny Wallace, Karri and Joe Sanders, Trent and Amy Lewis, Kristin Gassiott, Todd Lewis and Steven Holliman; eight great-grandchildren, Annie and Doss Hasselbach, Abby Lewis Austin, Kayla, Abby Wallace, Elise and Mitchell McLendon. Pallbearers were Kyle Cassiott, Trent Lewis, Todd Lewis, Steven Holliman, Brent Hasselbach, Frank McLendon, Danny Wallace and Joe Sanders.
