Monsignor Arturo Meza officiated at his funeral mass on Feb. 1 at La Iglesia de San Jose. Burial followed at West Park Cemetery in Hereford. He was born Feb. 2, 1938 in Robstown to Anastacio and Juanita Vargas. He was raised and attended school in Cameron and married Candelaria Suniga Vargas on Aug. 19, 1961 in Hereford. Vargas worked at Holly Sugar Corporation for more than 20 years as a sugar melter. He was also a self-employed truck driver and a member of La Iglesia de San Jose. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his wife Candelaria Vargas of Hereford; sons Rojelio Vargas of Vernon, and Tomas Vargas and Anesimo Vargas Jr., both of Amarillo; daughters Janie Aguillon of Hereford and Frances Martinez, Anita Soria and Jennifer Vargas, all of Amarillo; brothers Pedro Vargas Sr. of Hereford, Jose Vargas of Rogers and Mike Vargas, Anastacio Vargas Jr. and Juan Vargas all of Cameron; sisters Adela Corona of Cameron and Alpedia Fenton of Scranton, Penn.; 19 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
